I recently got a new degu, 7 weeks old. I put him in the cage with my older degu ( about 6 months old ) and the older degu keeps ''raping'' my new one. is this normal, and if so, how long does it take for him to realize that they're both male. thank you for reading and please reply if you know what to do in this situation

I'm new to Degus - I believe this is what they do all the time to try and organize their colony/heirachy etc. My 3 girls do it all the time. Don't think its anything to worry about. There is a section here somewhere about introducing them to eachother...I'm sure someone else here will be able to help more- dont panic

If they are rolling round in balls of fur and hurting eachother then yes do panic. If its just boxing matches they should be ok. Humping is fairly normal

As Dusty says, this is a completely normal and regular occurance among degus, no matter what sex is doing it to another of whatever sex. They just DO IT all the time, and it is part of what helps to keep everyone in their heirarchal place . . . NO LADDER climbing in a degu colony . . . unless you can prove you deserve it and the one you are displacing accepts defeat. Anyhow, older goo is making sure younger goo gets the idea early.
