Hello, everyone! My degu, Dexter is heavily pregnant, and is due to give birth on June 10th (estimated). Here are some pictures for the curious ones : Are there any clear signs that say she's definitely in labor? or even some not so clear signs that still could say she's in labor. She's been sort of lazy lately, which is most definitely unlike her. Do you think my due date estimate was correct judging by her size? Any information and advice you could give me to prepare for the delivery would be great! ;D

She looks HUGE!
No advice or anything from me I'm afraid, I haven't had any dealings with pregnant goos. But I hope she pops soon as she does look massive! Look forward to seeing pics when the babies do arrive!!

Oh, she is so big! She's easily three times the size of her mate. I'll give her about three days. She generally just lays in her makeshift hammock if she's not eating or drinking. I'm glad I put her in her "nursery cage" a few days ago (already got her used to it). The bars on the cage I currently have are too widely spaced for babies. I'm kind of nervous. I just hope she has a smooth pregnancy. I don't think I could react well to complications. After all, I didn't intend on babies. I'm not a breeder. A store gave me a set of 'boys' and one ended up being a girl, but I'm still happy with them. You'll definitely get pictures of the baby goos.

Wow! Your goo is massive! I bet she's having quite the large litter of pups. I noticed your comment about the dust bath. Dex is having issues with that as well. She tries to roll around as best as she can, but she can never seem to get her back.

Signs of labor? Not really, they are very quiet and rather secretive. She will likely try to ensure that she delivers during a quiet time of day. Our pups have all been born during the early morning hours.

Yes, I've heard they tend to give birth late at night or early morning.

It is currently the 15th and Dexter still has not given birth. I believe she will soon. She's hardly eaten the past few days and has just mainly been drinking water and sleeping. Here are some pictures of her, though: Dex in her makeshift hammock: Her tummy when standing: She likes using her rock as a table: Dex relaxing during the late afternoon: Dex and Connor having a nap: Hope you enjoy these.

Ahhh the poor little momma!! Her tummy looks so round! Especially in the picture with her stretched out on the cage floor. Looks like she is just looking for a cool surface to rest her belly on. She must be due fairly soon!!

Thank you all for your best-of-luck wishes. She's growing on a daily basis it seems. I feel as if she is going to have a huge litter, but it's alright. I have a few good homes lined up for the babies after six weeks. I kind of have a plan. I have a new cage set up for Connor, and it's right next to hers so they can still interact. I do plan on separating them, but I'm not sure if I should do it when she goes into labor or after she's giving birth. I'm not sure if she'll need to company of her mate while she's giving birth or not. I want her to have a comfortable birth. I do have the time to on my hands to figure out when she's going into labor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can separate them before, and keep them apart for the first 3-4 days after delivery, then they can be back together again for another 15 days before you have to separate them again, as she will be back in estrus. Degus have a 21 day cycle, day one being the day of delivery.

Thank you! I new about the after delivery estrus, but I wasn't aware of how long their cycle is.

She's still pregnant. She's beginning to act weird, though. Neither her nor her mate ever made a nest. Occasionally, I put bathroom paper in her cage to see if she would like to make a nest, and she just never got into it. I put some in her cage last night, and she started putting it in her little wooden house. She also started going into her house last night as well.
Frankly, I thought she was in labor last night because she just could NOT get comfortable at all, and sometimes she even looked like she was in pain. She won't take treats from me, but she still drinks when she needs to. I don't think she's having complications, but she just seems so restless. Her babies seem to have moved down to her pelvis area (can't see or feel at sides anymore). I'm wondering if that's a sign that her body is preparing for birth.

This is, more or less, all she's done the past two days. She switches spots a lot, though (top of house, hammock, cage floor).
