I think your only option at this point depends how much you trust your vet, if there is doubt in your mind you could seek a second opinion, perhaps consider another look at the teeth or perhaps an x-ray??
I hope this won't upset you saying this, but if you do feel it is getting close to his last day, you may wish to consider a necropsy, because I know you are really concerned about the other two brothers.
Hugs x

Sadly aafter returning back the vets this evening I discovered that despite my best efforts he has now lost 1/4 of his body weight. I sat with his the last two evenings and he cannot take a breath without a real struggle. He is weazing, sneezing and gasping just resting. It was painful to watch him want to eat but being unable to. He was wasting away and I felt he was suffering. I made the heartbreaking descion to have him pts. I spent the last two nights sobbing my heart out listening to him trying to breath. Just couldnt put him through it anymore. I asked about a necropsy but the vet wasnt happy to perform on such a small animal. Due to the death of two brothers both idential down to the letter with symptoms the vet feels a hereditory fault is the cause likely tumours/ lumps. Antibiotics and steriods didnt work. The teeth and upper respiratory tract where all ok. So the severely restricted breathing was due to a lump the vets feels. Just worried I have to loose enough two. I had to watch him suffer and the pain was too much. Tears are filling my eyes as a type. Two little brothers only three years old pampered and loved following all the rules and both suffered heart broken doesnt even begin to describe it. Thank you to all that have posted and supported.

My heart aches for you – all that you have gone through; all that he and his brother have gone through. Me and my degus send our deepest sympathy to you and to their brothers.

I am very sorry and sad as well! It is too bad that the vet is not inclined to do the nacropsy, as it would give you better ideas to follow up should this happen yet again. I hope and pray it will not!! My heart goes out to you, love . . . I feel so badly for your loss and the excruciating pain of the whole downward slope. Sending you hugs and love.

I am so sorry to hear about your little guy.
Has your Vet X-rayed him? Looking for tumours in the whole body, upper and lower molar root problems? Sinus issues etc?
Can I ask what doseage of baytril he is on?

Hi Luna
Thank you for your post. Sadly I have now had him pts. heart broken doesn't sum it up. We had the first anestatised and they checked teeth and upper respiratory tract but found nothing. He was on 10 i think. As with his brother this little goo's breathing deterioated really rapidly and was too strained to anestatise. In just over a week her lost over 1/4 of his body weight. Could bear to watch him suffer anymore trying to eat and being unable to. Forgive me but based on history my vet and myself felt best not to put him through the stress of an xray. The chances of losing two in excally the same circumstance are so slim it looks to be heriditory wish we could have figured it out xxxx

Also the vet felt that if there was a sinus or tooth problem there would be discharge or drooling esp with the severity of condition. So that ment the likelihood was a tumour. So I wasn't prepared to xray to simply find something I wasn't going to treat. I feel costly invasive operations with small animals is not something I would advocate in my experience they are very traumatic for the animal are rarely sucsessful in the long run. Operating on a lump was not an option. Forgive me I don't wish this to sound wrong but I spent over 300 pounds on his brother to loose him after nursing night and day for several weeks. I just felt his suffering had become to much was too painful to watch him starve whilst unable to eat. Symptoms pointed to teeth but we couldn't find anything wrong. I did everything I could. Xx
