How about a clarifying question first? Are you using glass or perspex? Perspex you could drill through, glass you will have to frame to protect the glass. I know what I would use . . . I would frame out the glass with wood, making the bottom strip of wood a little larger so that I could drill into it and not compromise the glass . . . then I would use a piano hinge that was closest to the width of the opening, so that I could swing it open and shut easily. I would use something like a hook and eye for securing it when it is closed. Does this make sense?

deguconvertomg thats such a better idea..and I think it could come out cheaper. and sounds soo much easier to build. Thank you so much for the idea! if I made the door this way should I use glass or can I do that with plexiglass too??

You can totally use plexi with that too. You might want to edge your plexi with metal u channels, as degus are more than capable of chewing plexi, but that won't be hard at all. You can just ask at your hardware store and they will be able to direct you to a good adhesive for it. If you take care to glue them early in your project, you can carefully wipe off all excess glue and you will find that the vapors will have diminished. It shouldn't be a problem at all for your degus. Now, for your wire mesh, you can buy these flat metal bars that have holes all the way up, and these holes work great for screwing through. If you cut your mesh large enough that it will overlap your edges by an inch, then you can lay the bar over top of that to protect your wooden edges, and you will accomplish two things. You will securely attach your mesh, and you will guard your wooden edges from being chewed. So, basically you are making a sandwich, plywood and metal bar sandwiching the mesh between them.

It's great to hear your plans are progressing both for the cage and getting a buddy for Moose. If I understand it correctly you hand-reared him? This makes him a special case and the introduction to a buddy needs careful consideration. Generally speaking behaviour is made up of inherited and learned components and Moose has missed out on the latter. I still think he will be much better off with a buddy (and won't like you any less ) but he may need special help in the introduction process. Maybe you could raise this question in a new thread to get more specific advice?

Fred, you voice my thoughts exactly. I have thought however, that the sooner Moose meets another degu, the better it will be for him. However . . . it could be a difficult introduction. You will have to watch carefully as he will be vulnerable as well as impossibly rude in the eyes of another degu. The other boy could find him very annoying. In a way, I'm almost inclined to recommend that you consider introducing a female that is somewhat older than him with the hope that she can teach him about being a degu, kind of mothering him. But as you know, that could lead to pups later on. I still think it is truly worth a try with the male that is alone at your work location . . . but if it doesn't look good, you can always think on maybe finding a female.
