I often let my Goo's have freedom within their ball, but never without as I have a fear of them chewing electrical wires or getting stuck somehere. I found this on ebay. Can you let me know if this is high enough to keep degu's in. I don't want them jumping over it. I can buy more than one to make it bigger if its suitable.

Hi, I'm pretty sure that they will be able to get out of there very quickly. I contacted this ebay seller and got a quote for some correx to make a degu proof pen. It was £18.40 delivered for 4 pieces at 4 foot X 2 foot. If you do a search for correx guinea pen you will see that it is really easy to cut and fold to make into a degu proof enclosure. Just add some bulldog clips to hold it together AND it folds up to store. Kat x

i use a correx play pen i'd sit in it & the degus run all over me but just be careful as i had 1 that would run around pushing all the corners and the sides to try and get out & would climb on me to try and jump out. the play pen is great for my other pets to such as my rats ,rabbits, hedgehogs and tortoises

I think your doing whats best for your Goo's due to wires ect. Not all of us have the room for them to run freely over 1 room or more. As long as your Goo get's exercise and i should be how you feel about using it. All anyone can do is give opinions some be bad some be good it down to us as owners to do what we feel best in our situations for our animals. My Raff got away from m and it took me 2 hrs to get her out from under the couch and she was not wanting to go back in her cage. I was in a panic as she kept running towards the TV where all my electrics are and goodness only knows what could have happened if she chewed a wire. Due to this I'm going to buy a ball I also have a gas fire and dont want any Goo climbing into the back of it like my kitten did when younger and sat in the hood peering out at us for a whole day lol she would jump out then jump straight back in as soon as we went to get her lol Pity you can't get a cat ball lol x (joke)

I had one of mine jump over a 57 cm board separating their play pen (corridor) and the living room this morning (at the tender age of nine weeks)

If that's what I think it is (Sammi playpen or similar) then: no - it's absolute and utter rubbish. Even a hamster is up & over the sides in about two seconds flat, so I doubt a degu would so much as notice it's there...

My opinion of using the balls is a no. It won't harm the goos, but for me there is no point in taking the goos out of the cage and into the ball, might as well leave them in the cage with their wheel. The main point of letting degus out to run is so they can also sniff and explore, they need that stimulation more so than the actual running itself. Also you run the risk of the degu overheating in the ball. Unfortunately the sniffing and exploring also means chewing things, including wires. My goos have chewed through my speaker wires, and they love the skirting board and wallpaper.
So, I'm also on the lookout for some kind of play pen, or more of a barrier to go across the room so that I can fence off part of the living room away from the wires. Otherwise I take them upstairs into the spare room and just keep an eye on them, especially for the lamp wire.

malteser60 - I am also looking for a barrier to divide a room. I have my eye on a long correx sheet but am not yet sure how to stabilise it. It can be found at Homebase under Corolux and Vistalux and at £ 13 for a 3 m sheet seems a bargain.
