I purchased a second hand cupboard and i am in the proccess of converting it into a degu cage! I have hit a deadend atm though as i am awaiting for the perspex to arive. This is what it looks like so far, i have the original pics of the cupboard too but they are on my boyfriends phone so i shall upload that when i can. Need to get some brances to go in there... Question: am i meant to cook the brances when i get them to kill bacteria?

Wow, that looks enormous! What lucky, lucky goos!!
I think you can either boil them or 'cook' them in the oven to kill the bacteria, no idea how long for though...

happydegu.wikia.com/wiki/Wood_for_Degus gives the info you need, can't remember where I got most of the info though You say "when I get them"...if you're buying them, this should already have been done. If you're getting them from a wood or somewhere then you have to treat it as described in the link to get rid of anything living or dead and to slightly cook the bark and make it more crunchy (remove moisture) for the degus :-)

what a good idea using an old cabinet! did you have to treat the cabinet in any way or anything? Is it easy enough tot ell what wood it is and so know its safe? i may copy you when i come to make mine xx

From what I've gleaned from here, the inside of the cabinet shouldn't need treating as the degus can't gnaw their way out of it...there's nothing they can get their teeth into from the inside. I wouldn't put it past the degus to try though, so best not to treat the wood with anything...also best to monitor them in case they have found a way, I know what resourceful little sods they can be sometimes :-)

ahh, great thanks for the branch info. Im going to the woods with a saw and a mission! haha, hope i don't get caught. I shall also get some pebbles. I managed to get the pics when it was officially a cabinet Uploaded with ImageShack.usThe cabinet was varnished a dark colour so we sanded it back to its natural color and have not treated it with anything since. Perspex arrived today I have also been busy making them a nice new hammok and a rope ladder!

In the absence of any responses to the contrary, assume cooking apple is fine. We can eat the apples so it's logical to assume they can eat the bark :-)

Starley, i think the best thing to do is go to an auction or a 2nd hand furniture shop, to find out where they are google some in your area. Here is my cage complete, just need some nice branches and all done!

i think im going to havce to have a look for that metal strip weve had to replace all the strip wood on the sides and bottom as they have enialated it and there having a pretty good go at the new stuff now as well! i dont know what to do with them?! theres plenty of other soft wood on the ledges and branches and stuff but they only want the bit around the door! well i say them i mean she as its only lyra that seems to do it! and she only does it when im in bed - ive taken to trying to read to her (harry potter OOTP) it works for a bit then she starts again! maybe i need a new book? dont worry about the hammock mine havent slept in theirs either yet, but emz said that sometimes it will take a few months an all of a sudden theyll decide they want to sleep in it aww thats a shame! im hoping its arrived by now? theyre usually quite quick? i ordered a play pen on sunday and it arrived yesterday? tanya xxx
