hello tail end of last year we constructed a wooden cage with mesh side and while it looks the busy the wooden shelves have started to smell one in particular where they wee and poo ive scrubbed it steam clean it you name it ive tried it so now im gonna whip them out and replace the shelves but i was wondering which would be better glass shelves or acylic ebay do many acrylic bits and pieces and you can have shelves custom made for the size i want ive been quoted £20 per arylic shelf but b&q do a slim glass shelf for £7.50 and it just happens to be the correct size i need any ideas
I would go with the glass myself, is this is the direction you wish to follow. The acrylic will scratch and I suspect the smell will potentially (although much more slowly) grow with time as it did with the wood. Have you thought at all about making wooden "tray styled" shelving, in which you can place your substrate which would then absorb the wee and help to control odors? Or do you already employ this form of shelf? Another option would be to apply ceramic tiles to the wood (probably new wood replacing that which is now smelly)?

hello degu convert thanks for reply we made the shelfs with an edge to add subtrate and we also covered with vinyl tiles to make for easy cleaning but the naughty diggies chewed them up so the shelf is past its best in six months lol i thought the glass would lat plus be eay cleaning too so is a bonus
