Hi All,
I really would like to have my boys outside for a little while in this hot weather, would this be a good idea?
Also, what kind of cage/run should i get for them? any ideas?
Many Thanks x

I'm not so sure this is a good idea, i'd be worried about them escaping, as most outdoor runs are for larger animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs and therefore have wide set bars and no roof. Both of which would allow a Degu to escape very easily.

i have seem a few at pet shops that have roofs and small bars. i have already thought about that, which is why i wouldnt buy one off the internet because i wouldnt no the size of the bars, but the ones in the pet shop look an ideal size

Can you post a link to the sort of cage you have seen? It might help give me and other users an idea of what type you mean.

It looks like a good run, but i'd be cautious about the degus chewing through it, as the wood looks exposed at the bottom so it might not last very long.

I could see them chewing out of that quite easily. You'd also have to transfer them into it and it looks like quite a heavy run. How wold you transfer them into it? Indoors? then carry the run outside with them already in it? Just a thought.
Personally, I'd buy a proper, al metal, very secure cage (second hand on ebay if it's just for when they're outside) and use that.

I think Amie's idea is a better one, and at least then your Degus wouldn't be able to chew their way out and can enjoy the sunny weather.

I take mine outside when it's hot, but I just take them outside in their cage, which I can just about fit through the door, in my opinion taking them outside is great though because they love smelling the grass and plants, hearing the birds and seeing my sisters rabbits too!

I'll have a look for some second hand cages for you What's your area code? Just the first half, not the full thing. PM it to me if you like. It makes the search on Ebay easier. Do you drive or could you arrange picking a cage up?

I'm planning on doing that when it gets a tiny bit hotter, I have to grass in my back garden though so that sucks! I made their old P@H cage into a run a while back so it's nice and useful now!

Sorry, been at work all work so I haven't had a chance to look I'll look for some cages later for you, but while I've got the idea in mind.... if you need something folds away, maybe you could try a small puppy/dog crate. They fold away and the degus would have access to the grass whilst in the garden because they're all mesh. The only thing you'd have to be really careful with is the bar spacing
