got a lovely surprise today. here is the story. i am off work - poorly sick - took daughter to school, came home, went straight to the docs, came back and tried to rest ha ha. kept hearing strange squeaks coming from the kitchen/dining area where the girls are. i kept thinking 'stop the noises! I'm trying to rest, please' popped head in, checked they were all OK (trying not to get too close as i have really nasty cold) all seemed fine saw Lana and nena in their cage, no probs. Danielle was all tucked up, no probs, so i went back to chill on sofa. carried on with usual routine, tea, sneezing, coughing etc etc. chins came out for a run. (naughty boys they were! lol) still kept hearing the soft peeps, wondering if one had caught my cold partner went in and said it was Danielle making the noises, as we both looked closer, to our surprise there was a little baby following its mom, and another one and another one. when we looked even closer there were 4! OMG..... how sweet were they. Danielle seemed so proud, she came running up the side to see us as if to say 'look what i have done!' i am so proud of her. ;D ;D ;D ;D i feel a bit irresponsible in a way because she obviously got pregnant by one of our boys when she thought she was 'Danny' and we didn't notice she had got bigger i have never seen a fully grown degu and as she was about 4 (so we were told) i just thought that was how she should be anyway mom seems to be doing fine and so do babies. will keep u posted

BAAAAAAAAAAAABIESSSSSSSSSSS ;D That's lovely news!
You don't have to feel irresponsible at all, if you thought she was a boy then there's nothing you could have done really to prevent her getting pregnant but BABIES are a dead sweet suprise ;D ;D ;D ;D
Aww, hope you can get some pictures up.
*sending well wishes for new mummy & babies*

mom and babies are doing really really well. i'm so proud of her. she has always been a little 'grumpy' especially with my OH. now i know why ;D ;D my daughter is over the moon. what a fantastic thing for her to see. ;D took some pics today. will put them on tomorrow. had to swap their house today because i was so orried about one of them getting out so now they are all in a large aquarium till they get a bit bigger. they settled in very well. i've passed on your wishes and they said 'peep, peep, peeeeeeeep.' ;D he he i'm so excited....

Congrats to you and mom!!! must be sooo sweet to see. I agree with Lala, you can't have been irresponsible if you didn't know, it happens and degus aren't one of the easiest animals to sex in the first place.
Well done Danielle!!

update! well, I'm finally better, thank god!! all the babies were doing well except the one with his eyes still together. we kept bathing them and they would open but as soon as the little sweetie went to sleep they would close again. on Thur night we decided enough was enough and it was a trip to the vets. i went to work on Fri morning early and partner was still at home-on lates- i got a message that the little one with eyes closed was also loosing his hair and not looking too good booked app for that evening, partner went to work blah blah bla... when i got back to get them all out one by one another 2 were also loosing their hair but one was OK. vet was lovely, looked for mites, no evidence of them, couldn't really see anything wrong other than they had no hair. they all weighed roughly the same weight and she thinks they are all girls ;D decided to give me some antibiotics for the eyes and for the rest of them just to be on safe side. she did say that we should be prepared that we might loose one even though they were all running around and looked very happy whilst at the vets. giving them the medicine was OK. they are so small they couldn't really refuse bless. this morning we saw them scratching and wondered if they could be allergic to the shavings??? got lots of carefresh and some nice paper bedding and changed everything. has anyone else ever heard of this kind of thing happening? or their goo's being allergic to the shavings? now i really really feel bad, if thats the case i have done it all wrong I've also put some eve primrose in their water to see if it could help sooth them. its sooooooo sad but they are running about, climbing, fighting he he. eating little bits of solid food and hay. i hope they will be OK. sorry for the long post Kerry x

Jack & Coke are allergic to something. Ever since we brought them home they have sneezed. At first the vet said it was a respitory infection but after 10 days on antibiotics they were still sneezing! So the vet said they have to be allergic to something! I've tried swapping shaving, putting the hay through water to get rid of dust, not using aerosols in the room etc. They still sneeze! Doesn't inhibit them at all though.
Let us know how the little ones get on on their antibiotics! Bless their little hearts!
*hugs and meeps* .x.x.x.

hi lala, they seem to be ok, they are getting aware of what i am going to do with the medicine. they seem to be getting stronger.
i noticed tomight when i put their tea tree oil on their bald skin, that there was tiny bits of hair beginning to grow. woo hoo.
i've been weighing the babies every day and they have put weight on every time. i think if i hadn't taken them to the vets or changed the bedding they wouldn't be here now... poor babies.
but they are getting stronger now so lets keep fingers crossed that they stay like that x
thank you for asking lala, x

i think she might have been ill treated by a man. when he talks to her she really goes for him but she is ok with me. she lets me get the babies out and doesn't even bother-perhaps she knows i'm helping them.
they have had their antibiotics for 7 days tomorrow but there is still loads left. do you think that i should continue till they have finished? how long did your boys have them for lala?

My dog's like that with strange men. The only men she trusts is my dad, granddad and my boyfriend. Everyone else she barks, growls and snarls at! Poor Danielle! Did the vet tell you to use all of it? Or just give you an amount of time to use it for? Jack & Coke were on antibiotics for 5 days, then after that they weren't improving so I took them back and they went on a higher dose for another 5 days. So 10 in total, and their chests were clear but they still sneeze How are the pups today? ..x.x.x.

i actually didn't hear her say i'll give them a ring in the morning and see what they say. they don't seem to be itching as much and their eyes are ok now. they are running around, jumping off everything and doing little baby poos ;D ;D they seem a bit underweight although they are putting weight on slowly. i really hope they are going to be ok i'm still worried about them. kerry x
