Hi have a few quistions about Degu's, since I don't know so much about them, but alot about Guinea pigs Are the Degu babies small and thin, or round and fat? Can you feel if the mother has milk in her breasts? Cause my little baby degu boy, has lost some weight the last few days, from 16-17 gr. to only 13-14 now

Is he the only baby? Have you seen him suckling? I think you need to suppliment his food, as losing weight like that will prove fatal. I'm so glad you are weighing him!! You need to buy a tin of kittens milk . . . think you can get at a vet? . . . and a syringe or eye dropper with which to feed him. I think he needs to feed every 2 hours. He is way too little to eat only the pellets and such, and that will be all he has now, it Mom isn't nursing him. He will need this supplimentation until he is 4-6 weeks. Often they are suckled just a little from the 4-6 weeks time, so a couple (2-4) times a day at this point is enough. Is this something you can do?

yes Have you seen him suckling? The mom is with him almost all the time so i'm not really sure. Here is a picture of one of her breasts: I think you need to suppliment his food, as losing weight like that will prove fatal. I'm so glad you are weighing him!! We have never had babies . . . unless our blatantly proud males undergo a miraculous change lol . . . so I can't say what a lactating breast on a degu should look like. Hopefully one of the members on here whose degus have recently had litters can enlighten us on that. From any photos I've seen . . . they don't seem very . . . obvious, like those of a lactating dog. I'm glad you can suppliment for him. Poor little sweetheart! He will be very glad to get some food I suspect!

hey sorry i just saw this post - our babies were all quite long and thin but they've plumped up and become more circular now. i can honestly say its not very normal for babies to lose weight and you shouldnt really see their bones protruding cos their little tummies are bigger than them! lol. i hope things improve for you - sounds like they might with the kittens milk, we live in lincoln and our babies are 2 weeks old so if you live nearby and have any more problems then Im sure Ursula (our mummy goo) wont mind feeding and looking after another one for a few weeks - as long as she gets a sunflower seed for it its pretty much a done deal :-D

He looks a bit thin but how many days old is he? Ours were scrawny for about the first week before they started to round out a bit and their fur loosened up.
Hope he is ok, all the best with him
