We had an unexpected delivery last week, thought we had 3 males but one is obviously a girl as she's delivered 5 babies!
We took the one who isn't the father out and we've had him separate for a few days - been spending lots of time with him so he's not too lonely - but we took him out because the 3 adults were really fighting and we were worried about them accidnetally hurting the babies and just the disruption on the whole for the female. Mother and father are doing a great job by the looks of things
Can anyone tell me if we would be safe to re-introduce the lone male at any point or would it be putting the babies at risk? We're waiting for a call from the pet shop who may have room to adopt him if not as we don't want him to be by himself.
Also, once the babies are old enough we'll sex them and sort them out for rehoming - going to advertise for good homes - and will have to split the adults too. Anyone had a simialr situation? I don't like leaving the one on his own but I really don;t want to split the family unit up as dad is being a little star!
Any advice gratefully received. Babies are thriving by the way, 5 little cuties! Far more worried about the adults right now!

our 3 girls are fighting at the moment and 2 of them are very heavily pregnant - we're thinking today or tomorrow at the latest before they burst! but they keep fighting all the time - we actually think its while they sort the nest out for having the babies and once they've had them they'll be fine. degus are quite odd as they actually all seem to chip in with the chores, housework, babysitting etc so i think you should introduce him and just keep an eye on them. the longer you leave him separate the harder it will be to reunite and i dont think any of them will intentionally hurt the little ones - ours are very rough with them but very protective. we adopted some a while back, mum dad and another adult male and 2 little boys and the other adult male was just part of the family! i think you'll be fine to reintroduce him but just keep an eye on them if theyve been separate for a while - you may have to introduce him for a little bit a day for a few days until they all get used to it again. Good luck!
