Many Congrats!!! Enjoy your babies. Also be aware, they can get through openings in your cage as small as 2cm X 2cm. Once they are running about in a day or two, you might find them in unexpected places.

question: my female is very pregnant (about 90ish days), and my male has built her a nest and everything. they both have been taking turns in the nest, but she still appears just as pregnant as befor. is it possible for her to have had a baby or 2, but still have the rest of the litter in her?? i thought that sounded silly at first, but sometimes people delivering twins can be as close as a few minutes to as far apart as several hours. i'd really appreciate any advice. thanks!

Givemescience . . . do you see any signs of babies in the nest that would make you think that there have been some born, and some not?

i've heard squeaks and whistles, and other than them taking turns in the nest there are no signs of babys. the other day the male(darwin) was calling, while the female(lucy) was in the nest sprawled out. this is her first little and mine too, so i'm a little nervous

alright, so i checked the nest, and there have been no babys. but since my last post lucy has what appears to be gone in to two false labors, where she is clearly having some kind of contraction, and darwin is making his call. this usually lasts for about 10-30minutes, then she goes for a run. so now i'm wondering, how common it is for degus to have false labors like that(or is it more common since it is her first litter)?

Wow! I have no idea about that at all. Keep a close eye on her. You may need to take her to a vet if she is having trouble delivering. I know that false labor is common in humans, and I suspect that "practice runs" of the same kind must occur in animals as well . . . ? Yet . . . what concerns me is the idea in my mind that animals have fairly straight forward labor, so why has she had two false labors? I don't know what to think at all, I confess! I'm sorry. I wish I had a better idea, or understanding and knowledge, for you.

Lucy had her babies last night!! (Thursday/Friday March 12/13) i have not been able to get pictures yet, because Darwin is being very protective and not allowing me to get a good view of the babies. As soon as i can get pictures i will post them, i think there are atleast 5 of them, but i still cannot get a good look.

Oops sorry I am a bit later but... Most animals will only give birth at night/early hours of the morning when nobody is around to see. So she may well have been in labour and just holding back until she was a lone. Nice looking pups by the way

I think you are right, because we got an official count when the whole family came out to play. Darwin and Lucy are much more trusting of me now that the babies are born. Before, when she was pregnant, she was a lot more moody. SO...there are 10 babies, and all of them are healthy looking. When they are warm they'll even venture out on their own, but for the most part they follow mom and dad as far as their little paws will take them. Here are a few more pics. Enjoy!! img15.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img2293v.jpg
