Is it possible someone can tell me when are you okay to start handling baby Degu's?? They are 4 days old now and we have to clean the cage out at some point but just wondered generally when mum will be okay with me doing this?
My husband daren't go anywhere near her as she has drawn blood twice already, the kids daren't go anywhere near having seen what Dad went through so its left down to me as she'll come up to my hand and sniff and chatter away (thank the lord).
Some advice would be greatly appreciated from an ever so slightly nervous handler who's definately on her guard!!!! ;D
Thank you

Yes, you can start to handle the pups now. How long have you had the mom? One of the things that has been discussed on the forum is the grouchy state of pregnant degus, especially as they get closer to delivery. Some goos have been grouchy but still fairly safe to touch, but not pick up. Others have been nightmares from the get go, and even to walk by the cage would nearly send the expectant mother over the edge in a fit of testiness. Most owners noticed a great improvement in the temperment once the babies were born. So, hopefully that will be the case with your little momma, and she will be much easier to approach and work with, for everyone. Some moms will be still a little nervous for the first couple weeks and then will relax more. It is important for you to be handling the pups every day, even a couple times a day. It will make them much friendlier and more eager to interact with you.

I started handling Enigma's babies when they were about 2 days old, Engima didn't mind she loved the time to run around and escape mum duties. There wasn't any problems with it, they are all really friendly.

Our Spook has always been sociable and friendly. She is currently (most probably) pregnant and isn't agressive, she has just become very shy. She doesn't really like been handled so we only take her out to weight her (still trying to work out how far gone she is) and she just does her best to avoid us.
