I was thinking that in a few months I'd buy or get hold of a female degu and breed with one of the males I'm getting soon, but I was thinking... would it be wise to put the female in with the males or would it be worth to put her in a separate cage then add the more dominant degu into the cage with her to mate? I suppose this would reduce bickering in a way as the other won't know she was there, unless he could smell her obviously and all that, but would it reduce the fighting? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

also, how long should a female degu wait to breed again.

Ok, There's a lot of things to consider before breeding and being as you haven't got your first Degus yet, I'd advise you focus on them. Sorry if I sound rude. I REALLY don't mean to be, I just know that keeping Degus can be a lot of hard work, especially for a beginner (like myself too). I think you'd find yourself over run by Degus very quickly and you'd also have to get TWO females, not just one as you can't keep a lone Degu. There's an artical by Nightwishraven that I think you should read and if you still want to breed after reading it.... I wish you the best of luck

Amie, don't worry, believe me, I wouldn't just jump into something like this, I know how hard it can be and distressing if things to wrong, I was just seeing if it would be something I would consider in the future, but thanks for the feedback!

you could look at it this way. Why feel the need to breed, when there are so many goo's looking for new forever homes?
I;m not against breeders, but as a rescue, i very often see, what happens when breeding gets out of hand.
Also, what happens if you sex the goo's wrongly? Then you could end up with loads of babies, which will need re-homing xx

but there is so much more to concider like, you being responsible for making sure that every goo goes to responsible and caring homes etc.. are you planning to make money from this idea? TBH i dont like the idea of it, not even a incy bit... sorry!!!

I just wanted to stress the point really hun. It's nice to know you wouldn't just jump into it and you're taking the time to learn That link is a good read either way. The breeding thought has gone through my hea a few times, coz who can resist babies ey? Then I came to the conclusion that they're are so many un wanted Degus out there (sadly) that I wouldn't want to add to that list. If I ever did breed, it would be to keep the babies, but I certainly don't have the room for that! lol. If it's something you really want to do in the future, all I'd suggest is read, read, read! lol

plus the very fact that i feel its unfair on the female goo.. it puts alot of strain on her to reproduce frequently therefore shortens her life..........i said it before and i´ll say it again...i dont like this idea...

Ok.... I feel like Cherpi's being 'ganged up on' a little here, lol I have my opinion on the matter, we all do. I really do agree with you Nuttz and I have the same train of thought. I think the other point to consider here is that there are always people that will breed. Otherwise none of us would have Degus! lol. My answer was in retrospect to Cherpi's age and experience with Degus, but I must stress that it's a good thing he's asking questions rather than just 'doing it'.

and yes i totally agree and dont mean to be a part of any gang..HONESTLY, so if this is how it seemed chirpie..........then i am sorry......truly!!! and yes, another very valid point added too amie, that IS that he is atleast trying to gain some knowledge first!!! i guess i have very strong opinions and also know that i may not be as tactful as id like to be.............. i just see way too many animals suffering due to bad owners, god knows..ive ended up looking after them myself far too many times.........but i guess if you do go ahead chirpie with your idea i hope you do all the researching as possible..the pros and cons etc etc......... i guess if you gain enough knowledge it may work out for you.............but i still dont like the idea.............im sorry, i dont!!!
