The manager was definitely wrong to suggest you were at fault for not double-checking the gender, they pass these adoptees on to new owners after an "expert" has checked their health and well-being, part of that would include gender checking. For them to expect someone to come in and adopt an animal and to have to know all that about said animal is an impossibility. If you still have it, look in the T&C of your original adoption documentation, and if you can't find anything which suggests that the customer is responsible for any errors or inaccuracies made by P@H staff then grab the manager by his tie and tell him you want to see where in writing it says it's YOUR fault they messed up. That said, it is your fault for trusting a word spoken out of the lips of a P@H staff member :-P
www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Info_10601_CSR_-1_10551#Caring%20for%20animals is a good read...lots of laughable blurb that says exactly what the manager didn't say like "For our products in store, we take great care in matching owners to our pets" or "we firmly believe that every pet has the right to a happy, healthy life". Correctly checking their gender before placing them in a new home is very important to their "happy and healthy life", and that burden is placed upon the provider.
www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Info_10601_about-pets-at-home_-1_10551 also has some info that would be useful, specifically "We are proud to be members of the Pet Care Trust, an organisation committed to raising standards of care and advice throughout the pet industry."...if the PCT found out how poorly you were treated (with regards to the manager saying the onus was on YOU to check her gender rather than trusting them) and how poorly the animals are treated in-store (with regards to no wheel and the fact they use wooden pellets that are a health hazard) then they might rescind that membership :-)
