I don't have to keep it dark, but doing so means they feel more comfortable and safe as there's less stimulation around at this early stage in their life...just their mum and anyone who's in front of the cage. Over the first few days they should be staying in the house but I've got it set up so the whole cage is safe for them and that means they don't have to stay in the house and Theresa knows they'll be fine exploring...she sits on a ledge and watches them sometimes.
And the one who was nibbling the leaf dropped it soon after, but he had a good go at it first. Flatmate just told me that another one (possibly the same hungry pig) has gone to the food bowl and taken a degu nugget away with him...and one of his kin was with him sniffing at the food in the bowl :-)

They can eat it from day one but they can't process it for a few weeks so it's more eating for practice than eating for sustenance...but they still have a go :-)
They have all sorts of solid foods in the cage for them, treats and other bits, and when they're ready they'll get some sunflower seeds as treats for coming to see me :-)

I'm waiting for the right time to get a good picture...the cage is too dark with the cover around it, but I might add a light source somehow for them :-)
Expect a video of them by the weekend, I'd say, even if I have to turn the cage round so it's got sunlight in it

As promised...a vid (well, two...one short, one a little longer) of the babies. I've just moved them from the front room (where the flatmate is) to my room in the top of the cage and it's all pimped out how they will like it with a wooden floor and two houses plus a few toys and a lookout (which is part of the cage). Once they're a bit older I'll let them actually look out on the lookout but for now it's covered at the side to keep the place warm.
Lots of squeaking and stuff in both videos :-)

Heh, that nade me chuckle. I was just saying to the OH how much they'd grown and then Mum came along and made them look teeny tiny. So cute!

They have definitely grown though, and they're so much steadier on their feet than they were on day one. I'll get some videos of them doing normal degu things sometime...I've only had them an hour or so and I've already seen one climb to the top of the nesting box (no mean feat) then get down carefully without needing any help (although I offered it), and another took a bite of a treat. One also took a sunflower seed and had a nibble from it. I've seen a couple of them playing on the roof of the smaller house (less than an inch of space between the roof and the lookout above...but they can get in there easily, and Theresa can barely squeeze in too :-)) and they've had a bit of fun exploring.
The boys in the lower two levels aren't always sure what to make of the commotion going on upstairs, but they've settled down a little since I moved the babies in.

Another vid with extreme close-up and following of one of the babies, who is narrating the video also btw just in case you're wondering about the squeaks...it's him/her :-)

8.5 days old as I write this...born at 6am/12 noon on the 20th and it's the 28th now (well, 29th, just past midnight...they'll be 9 days old when I wake up :-)).
And I have a small timothy hay rack in the top of the cage by the lookout, and one of them climbed into it and was standing up in it with their paws on the bar going around...it was so cute, but I didn't get a pic or video because they got out of it soon after.
I gave one a bit of dried carrot today and they ran over to the nesting box with it and climbed in. I gave another a sunflower seed and once they took it and started nibbling I got the camera set up and they decided to hide behind the food bowl (they're that small that they can barely see over it and it hides most of them :-)) then run off so I didn't get to record anything worth viewing.
Oh, and I watched one popcorning around the cage, it seems they prefer jumping around to running, it's so cute to watch.

I got this when I noticed all 3 huddled together outside the nesting box, and I even had a little play with them through the mesh and they nibbled my finger.
I've yet to get video of them popcorning, but this shows them playing together so is enough for me :-)

Was trying to get a video of them playing in the dustbath (they haven't worked out how to do it yet, but Theresa's shown them a few times) but they did all sorts of other things so I kept on recording once they moved away from it :-)
Edit: Video went bad at the 1:30 mark but I've reuploaded it so this is the WORKING copy!

She has been a good mummy most of the time, although the babies might not agree with the way she picks them up by the scruff and roughly drags them back to the house...worries me sometimes when she jumps down from somewhere with a baby in her mouth, but they seem fine. By the time they're ready to wean off from her milk they'll be almost as big as her, although that's hard to believe...I'll never forget their tiny paws, I just had one out of the cage a minute ago and he had a good walk along my arm with plenty of space either side, and then I put him back in the cage although it wasn't easy to do (partly because I wanted to keep on holding him and partly because he's a fidgety little bugger :-))
Oh, and I have updated the broken video above in case you missed the rest of it

Gizmo is now in the cage with Theresa to help with the chores, although at 10 days afterwards it's a hell of a lot longer than the 24 hours this site suggests and 2.5x as long as the 4 days degutopia says it is "safe" to reintroduce the males...neither time was right.
Edit: Had to reupload the video, it was in processing hell. Also, he's back with his brothers after a humping incident...STILL!
