Im really sorry! It wasnt so much you as in the past I have been almost bullied on this website. Ive gotten a massive cage, which big enough for a human to be comfortable in. And after announcing that to the people here, someone told me That is too small and that I should be aloud to have pets. It really isnt you, you just reminded me haha.Ive spent nearly 75 hours trying to bond with my degus, jus to be told that I am abusive towards them, not trying hard enough in other threads. It seems like on all pet forums, there are a few that take it way to the extreme. On a hermit crab forum, I posted which size tank I should get, and someone responded 100 gallon is the only appropriate size for them. Sorry for taking this out on you!

Perhaps you should live in the cage and let them live on the outside if it's big enough :-P
There's always extremists, but if everyone is of the same mindset then either you're wrong, not putting the facts across properly (mentioning cm when you mean inches, for instance...I'm always getting them mixed up) or you're on the wrong forum. Here, you'll find that if there's an extremist there'll also be someone here who is a bit more rational and will put in their tuppence-worth. However, we only go on what we know, so be as descriptive as possible and for the most part it will all work out well :-)
Extremists won't be happy until the hermit crabs of the world are all in an ocean-sized tank and we have no oceans :-)

It wasnt everyone, but it was three or four that seemed to post on everything, and send me private messages, so it seemed like it was everyones was! Glad to know that your on the same page. I really did take good care of my two degus though! I drove my mother crazy about it. Bought a big expensive wire cage, then had to get plexiglass cut for the bottom of it haha. But then was worried that their feet might get caught in the plexiglass, and hand made fleece floors. Now they are in a nice petstore making baby degus! And yes, she has no babies yet. They are going to be born any day. So ill have to wait two months.

If people EVER bring an argument to private messaging, assume the same rule as the "hitler" rule (where the first person to compare the other to hitler is automatically the loser in an argument). The only time this should be ignored is if the person is staff (deguconvert for instance) or if you have been asked by staff to keep it private and both of you agree. I'm a real bugger in an argument personally, I can take either (or even both) sides of an argument easily (and remain impartial at all times if it's "devil's advocate" where I'm on both sides), and my Asperger tends to make me stick to one side and never accept that the other is in any way right.
Best thing to do if someone tells you something is wrong is ask them WHY it is wrong. If they think a cage is too small, get them to prove it with something more than "well, my degus like a big cage" because until their degus actually learn to talk it's not an acceptable response :-) Places like degutopia usually have all the proof YOU need for your side of the argument, there's even a cage calculator which would tell you the optimal number of degus for the cage you have.
Plexiglass is fine (yet expensive) as a base, they would probably have been fine with cardboard (what I use in my cage floors) or tiles, maybe even wood...even lino flooring if they're not big chewers. Hand made fleece carpets sounds a bit too much though, most of us use wood shavings :-P

I switched to cardboard when I did have them! But I reakky miss my two degus now .....but I did have to make the best decision for them and their future babies. Im already picking out names for the new ones I get. I might even buy a third one! But for names I like...Mercedes, Santana, and Berry

You should be able to get at least one more free from her if you ask nicely, you've just provided her with the degus and she's giving you the babies that THOSE degus are having when they're born (if all goes well) so if it wasn't for you giving them to her you'd have them all anyway :-)
Good thing is you've got time to think about the degus and plan ahead, and you might have more fun the second time around. My first experience with hand-tamed degus was a pleasant one and they were friendly with me from day one...if she does it right you'll be very happy that you did the switch as there's nothing like a degu that jumps from his or her cage onto your t-shirt just because they can't be bothered waiting for you to help them over :-)

Dont get me wrong though! EVen though my other two didnt like me...I thought the were so much fun to watch! Of course! It's the same with the girls for me, remember...they don't hate me or my flatmate, but they don't like coming over and interacting with us either...they're happier doing their own thing, and I'm happy letting them do it. It's just my first love is for the first degus I got as they're the ones that really show their affection. They trust me implicitly, doesn't matter what, they even let me kiss their bellies without trying to scratch my face :-)

the key to taming as with most things in life is patience and slow movement. if ou scare them you undo some of the work you already did. remember that food and calm soothing words will get you further than calm words
