Finaly, My lil fudge has had her babies literaly in the last few hours.
We were starting to panic about her as it feels like she has been pregnant for ages bless her, the last few days have been really tough on her she has been huge and she could barely walk this morning, so I was actualy about to rush her to the vets if she hadnt improved by this afternoon. But sitting here on the laptop and we heard the tiny lil squeaks of the babies.
Havent had a good look in there yet as dont want to disturb her. So I dont know how many there are just yet. But theres definately lil babies in there. I saw a tiny lil head pop up. The cutiest thing I have ever heard. As soon as I can get some pics of her and babies I will get them up :-) I Just had to share the exciting news as I was getting so worried about her but she at the moment is doing just fine and the tiny lil squeaks seem to be fine aswell but will have more of an idea in the next few days. :-)

Congratulations! I am so jealous - makes me wish I had been given wrongly sexed degus sometimes even though that is a naughty thing to think lol! Can't wait to see the pictures.

Oh its so sad Emz :-( just come back from a meal for my dad for fathers day and found 5 babies dead and one very weak :-(
She could have given birth to the dead ones as still birth but because I couldnt really look before I went out to the meal I couldnt see properly. But now ive come back and 5 are definately now dead :-( looks like could have been some developing problems with 2 of them but the other 3 look perfectly fine which is such a shame. I did have a lil cry because it must be awful for her :-( and shes working hard to make this lil one left to feed from her but its just so weak. Touch and go at the moment.
:-( im so upset for her.

It is really upsetting. I just feel awful I really do. But thank you. I will be up all night no doubt and its so hard because I cant just go in touching around, incase she rejects it. But Fudge is so weak. Im starting to fear for her health aswell.
I am making those biscuits for ill degus in a min to try and entice her to keep her strength up.
Thank you for your kind words Emma, I really apreciate it. x

You might want to try feeding the pup yourself if Fudge struggles (kitten milk through a syringe?) so you aren't touching the pup but providing them with nutrients.
Whatever you do I am sure all of us here will be keeping Fudge and the pup in our thoughts. I tend to stay on a lot of the night as I am fairly nocturnal so if you want someone just to talk to I'll be here. x

Another one has just been found dead :-(, the lil pup who is alive is still moving about and seems to be feeding as Fudge seems to be abit more active now and sitting up letting the pup feed. We have made the lil biscuits for ill degus and shes had a lil ball of that and seems to have perked up thank god.
Will be up most the night checking up. But still going to the vets in the morn for some supplies. I need to be prepared for the worse just incase. Just hoping this pup makes the night. Its effected my hubby just as much as me, and nothing normaly phases him, but weve both really bonded with my goos so much. x

Both Fudge and baby have taken a horrible turn for the worse :-(, managed to get an friend at the vets to come over and bring some bits to help them! So we've syringed the milk baby just didn't want to take it at all but it must have got some we gave some to mum aswell, she had a shot for something aswell to be honest my heads all over the place at the moment I'm a bit of a state as I'm heartbroken to see fudge in so much pain! She's just collapsing and doesn't want to know the baby whatsoever it must be horrible for her! Its heartbreaking to watch all the others in the cage seem so subduded aswell :-(!
If no better tomorrow fudge will have to be taken to the vets for further treatment, I just really hope they both make it through the night

Is it possible that due to a large litter Fudge has some sort of internal injury? I hope not! I am so sorry to hear it took a turn for the worse especially after the biscuits perked her up, which may have been the salt or sugar giving her a bit of an energy boost. You said her pregnancy seemed late (or it felt like it was taking a while) maybe this has had some sort of effect? I recall reading that if they're late it can sometimes be due to dead pups that she still had inside her at the time.
I am sorry for rambling, I am just trying to possibly think what is going on. It is hard with no female degu or baby experience at all.

Thank you everyone your kind words mean a lot.
Well mum and baby seem to be a lot better than they were early hours of this morning. Fudge has rejected the baby unfortunately :-( she just seems to weak to want to deal with it. So we have been syringing kitten milk to the baby every two hours. The baby is very small. Smaller than the still borns. Im thinking it could be the runt of the litter however its been over 24hours now and baby seems to be doing ok. The only problem I have at the moment is keeping it warm. However fudge's sisters seem to be helping out which is good and i have also placed a heat mat down now aswell, wires are well out the way for any of the others to chew as weve drilled a hole through the next box and the back of the cage.
The others seem to be keeping baby clean and groomed which is good. My challenge now is keeping the baby and Fudge well.
As I know some vets as close friends they came round this morning again for me to give her some pain killers. They dont seem to think she has any internal injuries which is good. They have told me to keep doing what im doing and they both should be fine. Its still touch and go with the baby as its just so tiny and mum doesnt seem to care. But I booked today off work so I can feed baby every two hours and then my hubby is off tomorrow so he will feed baby. Then wednesday onwards im off. So at least we know this week baby will get fed.
I must say its the most heartbreaking thing Ive ever seen. Poor Fudge is just exhausted. Finaly has stopped bleeding and vet thinks that its just the trauma of such a large litter for her she couldnt cope with it. However she is eating and drinking and looking much stronger than she was last night which is great news. But shes still not out of the dark yet. But ill do everything I can.

I didn't have a chance to read these yesterday. I'm so sorry about the still births, and the weakness of both remaining pup and Fudge. I can only imagine how devastated I would feel and think that you are feeling all of that and even more.
I'm wondering if her pregnancy went too long? If she was having trouble delivering, or not even going into labor, that would have caused distress to the pups and their deaths. Whatever happened, it has been terribly hard on her, and on you and your DH. Poor Fudge!! Her body has fought so hard and I'm not surprised that she has little interest in her pup. I do hope that as she gains strength that will turn around. However she may not be able to take on nursing again. Her milk will probably dry up. I really hope that the pup will do well, and that Fudge will fully recover. She will be very glad for the comfort of her sisters, and maybe in a day or two, some cuddles with you.
Please let us know how things are going.

Thank you Emz and Convert.
The feeds are going well. Ive been reading up getting as much info as I can on here on old threads and also Degutopia has great advice.
Yeah Fudge is just exhausted but least medicaly nothing wrong with her as such, Ive been given some antibiotics for her aswell to prevent any infection starting.
I do believe the pregnancy went on far to long, and think that is what happened.
Ive made another batch of the biscuits for ill degus and for treats and shes had another nibble of one today. So hopefully will help boost her a lil bit.
No I dont think she will take on nursing again either. She doesnt have any interest in the pup whatsoever. So I will continue with the feeds every two hours. Me and my hubby will be taking it in turns through the night.
I will keep you all updated.
Thank you again for all of your kind words! It really does help to know I can talk to someone else who understands. I went into work for an hour today and got laughed at, I only went in so i could speak to my manager about taking the day off. Always better done face to face. So when I got laughed at by collegues that was the last straw really.
These lil goos are part of my family and its nice to know that I can speak to others who understand exactly what were going through. As it is truely heartbreaking. xx

What your colleagues laughed because you wanted time off to nurse a sick animal? That makes no sense.

I know, They just thought I was stupid because its 'just' a pet. They obviously have no idea about the kind of bond ppl have with their pets.
Obviously when I went into work I was in a bit of a state I had been up all night for them both, and I had been crying so my eyes were all puffy and they thought it was hilarious that I could get that bad over an animal - their words not mine.
I got called a Dramaqueen and all sorts, but end of the day I dont care. All I care about are these lil goos and Im determined to help them recover and to keep baby fit and healthy.
