At bedtime on monday he was more sleepy than usual but I didn't think too much of it as it was late and I just though that he was extra tired. On tuesday I checked on him as soon as I got up and he was very cold and weak. He couldn't walk and was lying down flat and letting out quiet clicks. He was really puffy, to the point where his eyes were almost closed. I took him to the vets right away, but after a few hours of fluids, oxygen and warming he passed away. I think that I kind of expected this after seeing him in such a mess but it was still a shock. The vet didn't have any real idea as to what made him ill in the first place and by the time I knew that there was a problem it was already too late to save him. If anyone has any ideas of how to make this time less stressful to his cagemate I would be greatful to hear them. I am giving his pal Gerard more atention and keeping a very close eye on him. He seems to be ok at the moment and he lives next door to lone degu (scrat) who I was trying to group with the pair, so hopefully he wont get too lonely. I'm just really gutted about this, I can't stop thinking of the state he was in, he was so sad. Kat xxx

I'm so sorry for your loss, Lianay2kuk! It is a terrible feeling, and my thoughts are with you. I wonder if in a week or so you might try to introduce Scrat to Gerard? Maybe it will go better this time round. Sending you and Gerard hugs.

Sorry for your loss and I hope Nibbles runs free in Degu Heaven.
I hope that everything goes okay with your other two remaining boys, maybe they can one day get along.

Thank you for you messages. It's nice to know that other people care as much as I do about little pet furries. Most people think that because its not something like a dog it doesn't matter and that you can't love it.

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Nibbles, I hope you are coping okay As for making things less stressful for Gerard, I remember reading somewhere (probably Degutopia), that you should give him lots of extra attention (which you're already doing , clean the cage and everything in it to remove any scent of his friend, and rearrange his cage (maybe buy him a few new things) just to distract him and take his mind off it. Good luck in pairing Gerard and Scrat, and sorry again for your loss
