This morning I noticed that one of my girls shelves was a bit blood stained and when I got hold of Matilda I noticed she was a bit bloody and scabby around her rectum. It wasn't full on bleeding so I bathed it in a salt water solution to get rid of the dried blood and now it looks better but still not right - it almost looks like she might have had trouble passing poos and has a bit of a blockage?
Has anyone else experienced this or got any advice? She seems fine in herself.
Thanks

A picture will show you what I'm trying to describe though won't it. I'll get her to the vets asap. Thanks for the heads up on the salt water. I'm just trying to do my best for her thats all and thought it would help. I know for future reference though now. Cheers mate.

i've never seen this myself, so can't offer any advice, other than, what you've already said, about taking her to the vets. Hope she is better very soon xx

Oh dear. It looks like a problem near the end of the bowel, close to the rectum to be showing fresh blood like that, although I'm not sure what that means. Just observe her and collect information to tell the vet when you get her there. Make sure she keeps drinking, maybe check whether she seems in pain when she does a poo.

Vets have given us Baytril to try her on then got to return on wednesday to see the exotic specialist. Poor Matilda. She's not bleeding as much but she's not herself. Currently she's snuggled up in a towel on my chest. I haven't seen her do a poo recently or drink but I'm going to try get some water in her somehow. She is eating ok though!

I don't know if it is the same in degus as most other things (though would imagine it is). Is the blood bright red or darker, more of a cranberry color (hard to see in pic)? Bright red blood is usually something down in the rectum itself, darker is from up in the digestive track. Usually brighter colored is 'better' if you have to have any blood. Is she a single goo? Has she had anything new in her diet?

I think it's more bright red. There doesn't seem to have been any frsh blood on her since yesterday but that may be due to her cleaning herself. She did look swollen in the area when we were at the vets. She's paired with what I assume to be her sister. I adopted them from a local pet shop as they were bought on a whim and then the woman didn't want them anymore. Diet hasn't changed. They get fed the P@H degu nuggets. She is a blue and I'm aware they can be prone to health problems due to inbreeding etc. She was very quiet yesterday and just wanted to snuggle up and sleep. That could b due to the fact we'd come across to stay at my mums though and it was a new environment and thus a bit scary. They were both acting the same and hiding all night so I let them snuggle in the pet carrier filled with hay next to my bed for the evening. They're back in their proper cage now and Matilda went straight in her wheel for a run around. Hope it's nothing too serious. x

Can you get a fresh fecal sample and have the vet check for parasites?

Well, went back to see the exotic specialist yesterday and Matlida has a rectal prolapse. The vet is hopeful that it will sort itself out so I've been advised to keep an eye on her and keep checking her. He's also shown me how to gently push it back in with a cotton bud if necessary. He's happy with her at the moment because she's bright as a button and doesn't seem to be suffering in anyway.
Just thought I'd update you all. Not sure if anyone else has had experience of this in degus before?

One of my boys has started doing this today, this thread has been really useful but looks like a trip down the vets.
