ok, don't panic. it looks worse than it is, and don't beat yourself up, i have had this happen to me.
Get some warm water and put a small amount of salt in, and bathe it. It will heal on its own, but make sure their sand bath isn't in with them. Keep an eye on it, and if it doesn't look good, then take him to the vets, but, there isn't much the vets can do for him, unless is gets infected, but you won't know straight away, but try and keep it clean, and when you've bathed it, make sure it is nice and dry. xx

Don't beat yourself up, accidents happen. As Nicky says bathe it and keep an eye on it, both Biscuit & Fudge have lost the end of their tails and it hasn't caused them any trouble - it helps me identify them too!

Would it be any help if I put him in an old hamster cage? Just for tonight? I'll put some sawdust, bit of food, nice warm place to sleep? I'll put them next to the other cage? I just don't feel safe and if he is gonna chew it the mess won't be all over the wood and stain it, I'd put him back into his own cage in the morning, and I put his tail in warm salty water several times but he didn't like it so I stopped.

I suppose it will help me, Joe has a short tail and Olly has a normal one. I'm so upset though

i use cotton buds, which i find works ok, he won't like it as it will prob sting a little, but that means the salt is doing its job xx
oh and i;d just be a bit careful with the sawdust as you don't want it sticking to his tail xxx

So I shouldn't put him in the hamster cage? What about if I did put him in the hamster cage with a few old tops on the floor instead of sawdust, I'll try the cotton buds thing, I did get a few tabs of the water on his tail but if you think I should try with the coton buds I'll give it a shot before I go to bed.

Oh sweetheart, I don't have anything helpful to add other than what's been said. It must have been quite a shock for you. I hope he's ok.

It happens very easily with degus, as it is a defense mechanism built in to their bodies. Any predator that has caught them by the tail will be left with the tails' skin, and will be distracted by it long enough for the degu to get further away. I'm sure it isn't comfortable for them . . . but they do manage very well, and most do a very effective job of removing the bony part that is remaining once it has dried out a bit.
I'm sorry for the shock this has caused you! Take more deep breaths and know that it happens, and doesn't by any means make you a bad mum. It was an accident. It's all going to be OK.

One other thing as well Cherpi. When making the saline solution, boil the water first, add salt, then let it cool down till it's lukewarm. Boiling will kill of any bacteria in the water. However, always make a fresh batch evertime you use it as bacteria can accumulate in the saline water.
Saline water is great as it acts both as a disinfectant and it shrinks the cells helping close the skin.

Oh, and wanted to say cherpi, you are definitely not a horrible, evil person! The amount of times I close the cage door on my degu's paws, they make this horrible squeek. They then sit there cradelling their paw looking so miserable. Or the flying leaps they used to do in the beginning. Although the funniest is when they jump off my hand and misjudge the cage opening and smack into the side of the cage. Should laugh though, they really don't like it!
