Thanx for help, I'll look it up. I got 2 degus 6weeks ago, been told they were boys, but checked them out and am pretty sure it's male a female. I'm thinking about vasectomy, the boy is only 4 months old. Is there higher risk with an anaesthesia for younger ones? Also his eye was watery with lots of whitish sticky residue when i got him. I've been cleaning it with salty water for few days and it was ok, but now it's back. Is it infection? And his front bottom teeth are overgrown. He can eat and chew wood just fine, but i think it's bothering him. (Can't close his mouth properly, pulling his teeth with his paw). Could he still worn them down naturally or it needs clipping? Thanx

I haven't found any lumps under his jaw There's stuff for them to chew ( wooden toys, logs, I bring them tree branches(apple, hornbeam) couple times a week) but he doesn't chew much, usually just gnaw on the cage. There was no improvement with his teeth after 6 weeks. I've just got some willow sticks and will try branches from different trees, maybe he will like that. Something else I could get, so he would chew more??? Dry pasta? Thank you

The teeth that get the greatest workout with hay are the molars in the back. Those they use to grind the hay and the hay keeps them from over growth. It isn't just the four incisors that can over grow, but the molars as well. Just as in horses and other animals that eat hay. If he is pawing at his front teeth (incisors) then he very likely needs to have them clipped soon. He will get them so over grown that gnawing on things will become impossible, and he will be completely unable to eat as well, losing weight and very soon becoming ill.

Ok. I'll take him to vet to get his teeth clipped. It's been already overgrown when i got him. I just hoped he would wear them down, if i gave him a lots to chew and spare him the trip to vet. anyway, Thanx for all the advice.

Something you might get for him, so that it is in the cage for him to indulge in after the trimming, is a pumice stone or pumice perch. My boys love to chew on the ones that I have for them, and they are excellent for wearing down their teeth and keeping them in fine trim. Most pets stores should have them, although sometimes you have to look for them in the bird sections.
