So, as most of you probably know I've got two girls, and their main feed is the P@H nuggets. That's what they got fed when still at P@H and I carried on with them. Also as degutopia says that it's a good feed for them. So, all is ok with them, they eat the nuggets and they got occasional treats.
However I went away for a long weekend couple weeks ago and left them loads of food (nuggets that is). I also had my boyfriend's sister come in and check on them, so I didn't leave them on their own for the whole time.
Anyhow, since I've gotten back they now don't want to eat the nuggets, only whatever treats I give them. I actually didn't notice anything at first until I realised they were looking a bit thin. So I weighed them and Nutmeg weighed 210g and Cinnamon 225g. This is about a 15 - 20g drop each from their previous weights. So after a bit of thinking and observing I came to the conclusion that they are now shunning their food and only eating the occasional treat that I give them. Not only that, it seems they'd rather go hungry and lose weight than eat the nuggets as, off course, I'm not feeding them that many treats so they are not getting the full amount of food that they should get.
I, obviously, panicked and worried a bit so I've increased the treats they get as I don't want them to starve. The treats they get is a maltese water biscuit (just wheat and water, no added salt, etc), bits of herbal delight, some oats, and meadown flowers/parsley. I'm not feeding them anything that is high in protein or sugar like nuts or seeds, etc. But I am worried that they are not getting the full complement of nutrients.
So, what do you think I should do? Shall I reduce/stop the treats so that their only option is to eat the nuggets (bearing in mind they preferred to starve than eat the nuggets)? Or shall I change their feed to a mueslie-type feed that will be more enticing than just brown lumps of nuggets, such as the gerty guinea pig one?
