deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=behaviour&action=display&thread=7582I wrote this a couple of weeks back. Long story short is that the baby has carried on biting Tink's tail but only after it's almost healed. We've attempted to discipline Daisy (the baby) but she just carries on and Tink doesn't even stop her, just moves away, we expected her to at least fight with her as Tink used to have an attitude. Anyway, today I was checking up on her tail as I do every morning and there was some sort of wire/string hanging off the tip. I pulled it assuming it was something off a toy maybe and it began coming OUT of the cut. My boyfriend managed to get it out completely and neither of us are sure what it is. Tink's eating just fine, and she acts like herself still apart from sleeping a bit more often and wanting to be by herself now and then. What should we do?

Can you post a picture to give us a clear image of what it is.

I agree . . . I would like to see what you pulled out, if you still have it. I wonder if that is what the baby has been after. Does she still go after the tail, now that the thing is out of it?

I read the title and instantly got the angryalien.com "alien" clip in my head so had to come and see what it was about XP "Eeeeeeeeeeee"
Hope your goo is ok though! Maybe it was an ingrowing hair?

As you can see it was pretty long with a bit of blood on the end that was hanging out of the tail. Daisy is still chasing after her tail, she does do it with her mum's tail as well but there's never any damage there.

I know :/ It didn't hurt her when my boyfriend pulled it out as she didn't squeak, she was in a bit distress but I think that was mainly down to the fact she was being held in one space and Tink hates being restricted.

=S It looks like a long piece of super thin string, but why would it be in her tail?

That's what I thought when it first came out. However, if you feel it it doesn't feel like string. It feels like something out of the body, not man made I guess you could say? I don't know how to explain it properly.

At first, I thought it could have been dead skin. But now I've seen a picture I am not too sure. Because if it was dead skin, it would be a flake and probably won't be that long?
Unless it is something do with healing. Like you know how a snake looses it skin? I wonder if it's something that comes out after the tail has healed? Unless it's a very thin layer or bone or Cartilage.

Maybe. Do you think it's worth going to the vets about it or should I wait and see if things get better/worse?

Have you looked at it under a magnifying glass or maybe you or someone you know has a microscope? It's just an theory but could it be a kind of worm/parasitey thing? I'm wondering if something could've got in the cut? Like I say it's only a theory. Hope you get it sorted! Poor thing. X

It's about the length of a full grown Degu's tail, it might look bigger cause it's so zoomed in. My boyfriend suggested it might be a worm but it hasn't moved whatsoever since it's been pulled out, there's no way it could have got into her cut because there's no animals in the house or anything like that in what could pass it on. I think we'll try looking at it under a microscope though, thanks

It's possible she has been treated before as she has a slightly shorter tail than usual and at the end of her tail it's a stump, it resembles a Rottweiler's tail after it's been cut. There's not much hair covering the end of the tail either. When we bought her all her sisters had the same sort of tail, so yes it's very possible I guess. Thinking about that now it could have been the medical string the previous vet sewed up her tail with and it's just finally got out with the help of the baby.

I want to know what it looks like under the microscope . . . to you . . . you don't have to try and get a magnified version for here. I would suggest that if it looks . . . wormish . . . or still like a body part or something natural, that you take it to the vet and have them look at it and see if they can identify it.

Thanks for the help, we're going to take her to the vets tomorrow. Let's hope he knows what a Degu is.
