I still think there is a chance the back teeth will resolve themselves when the missing front tooth grows in and if you can encourage lots of grinding action for the back teeth. Wait and see how it goes, if the problem with the front teeth persists then its annoying but simple and cheap to get them clipped, it's really the back teeth that could be difficult to deal with.
I agree that wood and bark are a great idea - both sets of teeth will be used - see what branches and twigs you can get of various safe woods in various thicknesses. You need fibrous material for grinding of the back teeth too. Maybe you could chop hay and/or herb mix into really short lengths so he can start grinding with his back teeth ASAP.
Good luck with it!

give him a bit more time - the top ones will probably overgrow until the bottom ones are equal.

hey agen. i took ur advice, and went to p@h, got the herbal heaven, they ate it the first time i give it to thm but were not interested in it after!! i fort it smelt really gd lol. i also put willow sticks into the cage, again, minimal interest from mr poorly goo. He really picked up, put weight on, started eating, playin and chewin etc, for the first week he was on metacam. through this last week he has started grinding his teeth again, which obv means he is in pain, although still on metacam. i am goin to have to take him to the vet tomorrow if i can get him in, but am afraid of wht they r goin to say as it has only been 2 weeks since his front and back teeth were cut and they are not willing to give him anasyetic tht often due to his heart. they cannot clip his back teeth without this as he moves around too much this leaves me with a problem, as if he goes to degu heaven, my other goo will be lonely. i dnt know if i would want to get 2 more so soon after my other has passed, so would have to adopt my lonely 1......

the last time i went to the vet, 2 weeks ago, they did over clip them, he only had tiny teeth, enuf to eat with tho. they have gone from being vvv short to overly long again in the space of 2 weeks. he has plently to chew on, eat and play with, he jus choses not to do it. i have booked him into the vet tomorrow to c if there is any more they can possibly do.

they x-rayed him and all they sed was that his roots were not gd, all wonky and stuff, which means tht he will always have problems. its sad, coz hes such a wkd lil goo. i dnt wanna get rid of my other 1 when the time comes, so i am considering leaving him on his own 4 a few weeks and c how he copes.
