Hiya, im stuck and need some advice! i have 2 degus, 1 of which i took to the vet last week to have his bottom teeth filled down as they were over growing the top ones. Last nite i noticed that he has only got 1 bottom tooth, which means he must has pulled it out. he is constantly grinding his teeth anyway, not sure y, but the point is he now cannot eat and has lost alot of weight and his fur is all puffed up. i am ringing the vet today to get him booked in asap, but wud like to know if ne1 can help me on here plz!! Thanks for ur time, need speedy responses plz.

i'm sorry to hear about your goo. The only thing i can think of, is to put some of his nugget in boiling water, so soften them, and try and spoon feed him. I;ve never ahad this before so can't give you advice from experience.
I;m sure someone with more know how, will be along soon, sending loads of google cuddles xx

and what about egg? im not sure if degus can eat egg or not, possibly just the whites??? but if so you could scramble it... maybe have a look on the net to see if egg is safe or not, it was just an idea, maybe a silly one but im trying to think of foods that are soft for him.

i jus gave him some organic vegie baby food and luckily didnt have to syringe feed him, he jus licked it out of his bowl which was handy. i will try porridge oats if he becomes bored of the baby food but hopefully he will start eating properly after they clipped his teeth tomorrow. however, i am not sure he will b able to eat solid food or not as he still only has 1 bottom front tooth, although the vet did re-assure me tht the other 1 will grow back as it has only broken, not come out at the root.

i guess he is just feeling sore but its reasuring to know he is eating a little already, the main thing is that he doesnt lose his appetite for too long so as long as he is eating little and often im sure he will be ok. i take it he is drinking ok? this would be more worrying. fingers crossed for a quick recovery!!! get well soon lil goo xxx

it sounds asthough you are doing all you can for him and with a little luck he will be up and about in no time causing all sorts of trouble.. such a shame vets charge so much over there... its so cheap in spain, i was in the vets for an hour and half a couple of weeks back and only got charged 20 euros, that included most medication and blood test. if they can be so cheap here then i dont see why english vets charge so much, after all...they are supposed to be doing their job because they love animals not just to fill their pockets!!

Porridge seem like a fairly good replacement food for a short period, they can have quite large quantities of them with no problems.
I's have to agree with nuttz about the baby food, too much of it would give him a bit of an upset tummy.
A combination of the baby food and oats sounds like a great idea though.
Hopefully after his trip to the vets he'll be back to normal eating habits. Keep us posted!

Maybe he would take some of his normal mix if you ground it up to small crumbs? I had hamsters with misaligned teeth. You probably will need to keep an eye on his teeth in the future. Maybe the back teeth only needed sorting as a knock on effect of the problem with the front teeth. It might help if you could really encourage chewing and grinding foods - different types of hay or herb mixes, lots of fresh branches and so on. Anyway get well soon little guy

hey guys, update time: mr nibbles had his back teeth done. he is however still grinding thm, and having trouble eating due to the lack of 1 of his front teeth. i have found out tht crushing his food into small bits and mixin it wiv porridge and baby food is encouragin him to eat small amounts. have bought him loads of chew toys, which he is showin no interest in at all. the vet sed he will prob carry on having problems with his teeth, so may have to think about doin the unthinkable. this wud mean chewy lewie being left on his own. he has a catact. i wud thn have to think about re homing him so someone cud put him wiv their goos or investing in 2 baby goos to be his friends and keep him here.................any suggestions?

the reason the vet sed this is due to the fact tht he may need his back teeth clipping every 5 weeks or so, and to do tht they need to give him anasthetic, which everyone knows is a risk on such a small creature in the 1st place. the vet told me tht his heart may not b able to take it, which is the reason i may have to think about puttin thim to sleep, not only due to the money circumstances, as it will be costin £65 to do the back teeth and £6 to do the front. He is not chewing because he cannot grip any thing wiv his 3 teeth, but he is tryin. i have bought plenty of sticks, but no willow, as some ppl say this is very harmful to degus, i am not prepared to take the risk! there are limits to wht new toys, shelves and bridges i can put in the cage due to my other goo having a catact and i dnt want him banging into things and fallin over. i am gunna try my hardest to prevent puttin him down but i have to take the risks into consideration also. thanks so much 4 ur advice xx

thanks 4 the advice lol!!
My vet tried to clip his teeth without the drugs but he wernt havin ne of it, so they did it for his safety.
he is running around n playing like his normal self, jus not eatin as much as he shud be, but other than tht he is fine. i am goin to leave it a week, then take him back to the vets 4 a check up, jus wanna get him over the shock of goin first lol. he wont even come out atm, very wary as he knows im the 1 who took him to the vet!!
im goin to pursue him and not give up, after all this all adds to the experience lol.
xx
