Hi guys, I went to see my degu's after uni today and Shawn had a swollen, sticky eye with a little cut above it. I phoned the vets and asked about it. I know small animals can fight, and degu's have quite sharp nails. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen before? Even if not, do you think there is any harm to his eye ball? The cut stops just before the ball. I've washed it with boiled then cooled salted water, it looks a lot better now but I need some reassurance and guidance.

He doesn't show any signs of swelling or pus, and from what I can see of the eye ball itself, it looks to be in good health. There is no cloudiness or anything strange there either. I think if you just continue with the salt water bathing, he should recover very nicely. You've done the right thing!

Thanks guys, when I checked on him this morning he couldn't even open his eye so I gave it another clean and took him to the vets. They gave me a cream to put on his eye twice a day for a week because it was red, swollen and looked sore. Apart from that he's fine, if not a bit shook up from taking him alone to the vet! Thanks again.

Sounds like it took quite a turn! I'm really glad you took him to the vet. I sure called it wrong. I hope his eye shows huge improvement very soon!
