One of my guinea pigs has had mites for a while (mite spot on hasn't done much as I think the dose was too low for him - he is very large! Need to get some more treatment) and my degu enjoys grooming my guinea pigs. I've noticed him scratching more than usual recently and I think he might have picked them up from my guinea pig. Is this possible or am I just being paranoid? Also, if he has contracted mites is the spot on used on guinea pigs rabbits etc. safe for him? Thanks

Not sure, but does your goo have patches of fur missing? I heard that may be a cause of mites?

No I don't think so, his fur is in very good condition as far as I can see but perhaps he might have only just got mites so there wouldn't be any physical symptoms yet.. He just seems like he is a bit itchier than usual

Yes, I do believe they can catch mites from another species, as mites are not species specific. They don't care who they such blood from, just so long as they have blood!

Thanks guys. I'm going to attempt (he will not be pleased) a trip to the vets to get some mite treatment etc. But does anyone know if this is ok for degus and not harmful? I don't know what it's called but the vet prescribed it for my guinea pigs and it says suitable for rabbits and birds too but I'm not sure seeing as my degu is quite small and the dose is determined by body weight..there might not be a dose low enough for him

It wouldn't hurt to get the right dosage, and it will be fine, with the right dosage. I suggest that it would be a good idea to get another dosage for your GP as well.
