hi im new to degus but very experienced with rats i think my wee rascal has a cold but im not sure. she has been squeeking all night but seems to have stopped at present. She has been eating and drinking there is no discharde from her nose or bum. She doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort i am going to take her up the vet but thought i'd ask you guys first as your probably more experienced than the vets. Can she get doxycycline like a rat does as they get baytril. Any information would be cool thanks for reading.

If she has been sqeeking all night and she's kept on her own, she might be lonely. How long have you had her and does she live with other degus?

she has another 4 pals and ive had them for 2weeks nothing has changed in their feed or bedding and routine has stayed the same i guess they are similar to rats in the way they just appear to catch things! i have now got an appointment with the vet so im thinking baytril and the vet seems to agree with me poor goo

Is it just the last night she was squeaking? She may have had a bad dream?

Degutopia recommends Septrim rather than baytril for degus under 6 months, if that applies to you, and it can help to print off and take the dosage/suitability list with you to the vets the first time. If you already know your vet a bit from your rats, the vet shouldn't be too offended if you offer them the info lol! Here's the link to the info: www.degutopia.co.uk/deguvetlist.htmBut like the others said, I'd consider other things than infection first, they can be very vocal if they are a bit upset.

thanks guys the vet says she probably has a dust allergy oh dear im now going to have to rethink hay and bedding. they are on shavings and timothy hay but going to pets at home tomorrow and check out their dust free litter and hay if need be i can always search the net for dust free hay. the vet gave me baytril for the 4 of them. the wee one that is sneezing does still sneeze/squeek when being handled and they dont mind being cuddled they are so easy to handle compared to my darling rats. althought they have had one dose of baytril nand rascal sounds a little better already. thanks for the posts
