Hi all, some of you will have noticed that I have in recent posts included some more exotic smileys. This was part of my so far private campaign to get a better selection of smileys available on our forum. We have an increasing number of members whose first language is not English and when you have some difficulties to find the right words or phrase, this can be very helpful. There is no need to overdo it, but I would find a range similar to that on DeguForum.de attractive. This is their collection of available smileys (note that the majority is animated). I have asked the forum owner for permission to show this here. I have looked it into this, and it would be quite easy to provide something similar on our forum. Additional smileys could be chosen from the collection at www.freesmileys.org/. It wouldn't take the administration more than a couple of hours, and I'd be happy to assist if requested. Looking forward to your opinions and hopefully support for this suggestion.

I'm all for more smileys! I think this would be up to sunshinemeg though as she's the one with absolute power of this forum. We're just the little minions making sure everybody behaves ;D

Sounds awesome. It'll be easier to communicate humour for those where English isn't their first language. I find smileys stop everything from sounding so blunt and help to understand the context of what's being said.

There's been a few things that she couldn't do... oh all confusing. I definitely know us standard mods can't.

There are a few other things that could be addressed. Thankfully I am partially colour blind, but I have heard others say the colours are atrocious?

Greatly limited computer skills globmod (somes like something you spit out . . . ewwww) here, and I have looked at the smileys question . . . truly! However, there is computer lingo in there that I absolutely do not understand, so have no idea what they are telling me to do. It could be easier than 1,2,3 but still I don't grasp what they want. Sorry! I do think it could be within my globmod powers . . . just not my computer powers. As for changing any of the colours or the appearance of the forum in general, this lays solely and entirely in Sunshinemeg's control.

You need access to two admin areas Restrictions - censored words Customize your Forum - Headers and Footers If you have that, I can guide you the process, step by step, without any problems (no wizzard myself!) For Headers and Footers you need to modify a script but I could do that for you so that you just have to copy and paste.

OK, tutorial step 1 You have to define all smileys as censored words. Let's consider we want to add this smiley Go to your admin area Under Restrictions, click on Censored Words something like this will come up In a pair of empty boxes type in the left box *test*copy and paste www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-computer005.gif[/img into the right box, then close the bracket at the end (I had to leave it open here because otherwise the image would appear). Click on Save Censored words If you write *test* in a post or pm, it will automatically be replaced by the smiley. (This process has to be repeated for every smiley you want to add) Have a go and see whether it works. If it does, we can move on to how to add the new smiley to the smiley bar.

Proboards are fairly simple to use once you've figured it out (obviously! lol). I'd be happy to help with anything like smilies etc, Faith

That would be great, Amie!! I think you have the same powers as I have, or at least most of them. Have a look in the admin section and see if you can open the header and footer section. Let me know?

Great amie. Below is the script that I would recommend to use. There are others around but from my tests, this one seems the simplest and best working. I have inserted the test smiley from “tutorial 1”, for the smilies you want to add, you simply have to replace URL_from_freesmileys and *name*Since the name will appear in the text while people write their posts, I would suggest to use short descriptive words like , *grin*, , , *bounce* etc. If you can get access to Headers and Footers, you could first insert the script into the footer of the mods board to test in private and later copy/paste the finished product to the Global Footer. ==================== <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- //Extra Smilie Code, //Coded by Roger aka RKO. //DO NOT RIP NOR REPOST var smilies = new Array(); smilies[0] = ['http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-computer005.gif','*test*']; smilies[1] = ['URL_from_freesmileys','*name*']; smilies[2] = ['URL_from_freesmileys','*name*']; if(document.postForm){ var td = document.getElementsByTagName('td'); for(t=0; t<td.length; t++){ if(td[t].className == 'windowbg2' && td[t].width == '30%' && td[t].innerHTML.match(/Add Smilies/)){ for(s=0; s<smilies.length; s++){ td[t+1].firstChild.innerHTML += '<a href="javascript:add(\''+smilies [1]+'\')"><img src="'+smilies[0]+'" border="0"></a> '; } if(location.href.match(/action=display/)){ document.body.innerHTML = document.body.innerHTML.replace(''+smilies[1]+'','<img src="'+smilies[0]+'" border="0">'); } } } }
//--> </script>
