Hi,
I became a "slave" to 3 degu 4 month brothers on Sunday. I got them from Pets at Home adoption section. I admit that they were a bit of a spur of the moment buy, but as I had kept rats and hamsters for most of my life I decided I was up for the challenge and happy to do plenty of research.
At the moment they are in an old 2 tier Critter cage. But will hopefully be moving to a tall Chinchilla cage at the weekend.
I'm really enjoying looking at all the wonderful cages on here for inspiration. I'm hopefully going to use as much of my existing stuff as possible to keep costs down, but I know I'll need a wheel, a hut and wooden shelves. I was using plastic ferplast shelves in the cage when it had rats in it. Will the plastic shelves be ok in the short term till I get wooden ones? Is it ok to use plastic tunnels?
Actually I think I'd be better off starting a new thread in the appropriate section to query what of my rat stuff I can re-use for the degus and what needs replacing.
Looking forward to chatting to you all about my goos and learning lots.
Norah

Welcome to the forum, Norah!! Sounds like those four little goolings reeled you in, hook, line, and sinker! Yeah, we're all wrapped around the paws of our various degus too. LOL! Read away, and ask any questions that arise. Nothing is silly or stupid with goos. They are WEIRD all in their own right. As to rat things . . . I've never had rats, but I can tell you that degus are avid chewers, even insanely COMPELLED chewers, and plastic is by no means safe when they (degus) are around. It plastic is all you have at the moment, it will do, but the sooner you can replace it the better for your boys and you. As to your other rat things, maybe list them in another thread as you thought, and we can help you with what is safe to wash and recycle.
Once again, welcome to the forum!

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome. I'm totally enthralled by the goos. I can't stop watching them. They are manic compared to rats. Constantly running from one task to another, chew box, Oh need to chew corn tunnel, Yikes haven't chewed the hay ball for 5 min must get to it in super sonic speed, Phew got there in time, but now I gotta see whats happening on the next level, ok made it will have a quick chew of the hammock climb the bars a bit, grab a bite to eat and a quick drink. Back down to the box and the cycle starts all over again!!!!! ;D
Adorable.
