In the wild degus will eat insects aswqell as vegetation and roots. I know Sam likes spiders... Hard part is trying to stop him chasing them down when he's out...
I have no personal knowledge of mealworms being good or bad but it stands to reason they would probably eat them given the chance.
The question is , is it healthy and I'm not sure any of us know for sure. I'd say it would be fine but I'd wait for other comments before trying it. I certainly won't give mine any...

I would say they have quite a lot of protein in them, so if you are to feed them, I'd only give them one every so often.

i bring on my own mealworms as i feed them to my rats, and the frogs in the garden! give sparingly as they are high in protein, so ideal for babies and for encouraging growth etc

Personally I wouldn't feed them mealworms as their digestive tract is not designed for high levels of protein - it's designed to maximise nutrient extraction from nutrient poor food such as tree bark. Once in a while doesn't hurt, like when they catch insects. But I wouldn't introduce the food (mealworms) deliberately.
I know there is mention that they eat them in the wild but it doesn't mean it's good for them! Just like us humans indulging in too many fatty foods. Plus in the wild they may need the occasional insect to complement their diet, however as pets they get a very balanced diet.

I agree with malteser, although a mealworm here and there will do them no harm whatsoever, they aren't good for them, and there's a tonne of other treats that they love and have some nutritional value in. I'd only recommend them now and again for lactating females really.

I feed my mums dried meal worms occasionally - they go absolutely nuts for them.

Mine get also dried meal worms from time to time...they love them, but it's maybe one each two months or so...nothing regular
