Hiya! Ive looked on here, and on degutopia and searched through google and i can't find the answer to my question. So i figured i would ask I got some coconuts from Lidl (2 for £1!!) couldnt help myself, i know they can have the shells of the coconut, they like destroying them apparently . But can they have a small amount of the flesh? I know gerbils can have it, but i also know that degus have the tendancies to diabetes, so i thought i would play safe and ask x

From what I've seen on the 'net the flesh is a no, sadly. If I knew where I read it I'd post a link. EDIT: Found it. About halfway down... www.degutopia.co.uk/deguenrich.htm

I was given 2 fresh coconuts last week. After attacking them with a hammer and chisel to break them in half, I scraped out all of the 'flesh' and left them to dry in the sun for a couple of days before putting them in with the girls. Have to say they went absolutely nuts over them and in the process made a complete mess out of their newly cleaned cage by throwing the shreddings everywhere.... hoover been on meltdown all week but worth seeing their enjoyment!!

They really love destroying them. I have split them in halves and removed the flesh completely. I recommend to hang one half in the cage (with a chain or rope through two eyes so that it can swing about) - it's plain hilarious how they attack it ;D

Aw, Ive heard the same, from my research I've found that the meat is far too high in protein? (high amounts of protien can cause liver damage) but the husk is absolutely fine and a fun thing to chew due to the unusual texture.

That sounds like the voice of experience. ;D ;D Which did you like better, the fun of chewing or the unusual texture?

I'm confused, My understanding is that the husk is the fiborous 'hair' on the outside, After reading how much they like it I want to get mine some but want to check if the hairy part is safe?

The husk is safe.... it just makes a mess of the cage when they shred it everywhere!!

Don't forget the noise!! My two like to 'drive' the coconut shells up and down the shelves (imagine a paw each side to steer and teeth holding on in the middle) it's unbelievably noisy! So much fun to watch tho, they love them.

ROTFL!!! That sounds like great fun to watch! I would love to see that. Our just look at the coconut shells and then look at us as if to say, "And you think that is . . . a TOY??" Decidedly not impressed by our generousity!
