A friend of mine and I make treats for her rats using wheat flour and various flavourings. I know that the sugary ones like honey and the cheesy ones aren't suitable but is it OK to give the goos ones flavoured with parsley? The only ingredients are wholemeal flour and dried parsley bound with water then baked until they're hard. We bake them with holes in so they can be hung up which is a great enrichment activity for the rats and I'm hoping will be OK for the goos.

Yeah, totally! I think that you could add other things such as dried dill, or oregano, rosemary, basil, thyme, rose petals, marigolds, or daisies. We were sort of talking about using this kind of thing . . . but with the addition of paper, so it's basically flavoured papier mache, which would make it more gnawable. OH!! I have thought that bits of Timothy hay in it would also be very good for their teeth. I'm going to have to get busy and make up some of these things! LOL!!

they're gorgeous! And such great quality pictures!! Think I might have to try making them this weekend! they look FAB! The ratio I used was 100g of wholemeal flour, 1 tsp of dried parsley and about 60ml of water - mix and knead then roll out to about 5mm thick, cut out and bake at about 170c for 20 minutes or until hard. I poked a hole in them before baking and hung them up on a metal shower curtain hook.

It looks brilliant! How long did it last? LOL! Not very! They'd run away with it within about 5 minutes - there was a small piece left about 5 minutes after that, LOL

my first attempt didn't go too well.... i didn't roll them out thin enough so they didn't go hard and two of them turned their noses up at them and the third had a little bit of it! Going to try again later this afternoon and make them thinner and see how they like that! They look great though - maybe the second attempt will be more popular!
