My girly goos were going a bit chompy crazy tonight, so I thought I'd try them with a hazlenut. They went nuts over them (pun intended ;-))
I thought they would get bored and not be that bothered, so I put two in between three of them, after immediate whining I quickly scuttled off to get a third so they could have one each - that was me told!
They were hilarious hopping round the cage, trying to find the perfect spot to tackle the nut, changing their minds every ten seconds. After a while, one was looking very determined, the second was looking a bit less determined, still moving about with it, and the third had given up and buried hers. She then went to muscle in on the determined one, so I had my hands full after that, trying to allow the determined one to tackle and eat hers in peace. Less determined goo gave up too after a while, she kept dropping it on her travels and going frantic looking for it, when it was right under her nose. I had to point it out to her a couple of times, I'm sure she thought I'd nicked it! I don't know if she deliberately left it in the sand box in the end or lost it!
I spent the next twenty minutes trying to distract the goos that gave up from the one doing the hard work. She whined like crazy when they went begging and interfering, and my human sense of fair play didn't like to see the quitters gain from the hard work of the one. I certainly had my work cut out with this policy, I had to open up one of the nuts and share it between the quitters to lure them away. Tried to get in a bit of hand training while I had a 'super treat' in my hand.
Anyway, it certainly provided a good bit of excitement for everyone, me included I'm glad they can't have them often - I couldn't cope!
BTW, they do have names, Florence, Alice & Molly, I just can't tell them apart (still)!
