I started off with P@H nuggets as that is what they had at the shop (obviously) but it looked very boring. I now mix 500g of nuggets with a 500g bag of xtravital degu food and a 1kg bag of wilkinsons guinea pig food which is currently £1 for a 1kg bag. www.wilkinsonplus.com/guinea-pig-food+hutches/wilko-muesli-mix-with-vitamin-c-for-guinea-pigs-1kg/invt/0165258/They definitely like the nuggets least but I usually refuse to refill their bowl until at least most of the nuggets are gone, LOL. In an ideal world they would get nothing but xtravital (their favourite) but at £13.75 for 2.5kg it's not happening! Giving them a mix means that if I ever can't get one of the foods they at least have something they're familiar with.

I started with P@H nuggets, and one day thought I'd give them some Gerty Guinea as a treat. That was it, the P@H nuggets were refused. 3 weeks later I gave them P@H Nuggets again and after 2 days of me not offering them anything else they're now eating it again. I've just had some XtraVital Degu delivered but fear it may lead to a refusal of nuggets again.

The way around them going off their nuggets is to only hand feed them the Xtra Vital, woodchip. That's what I do anyway and they always eat their nuggets now. They get Nuggets as their main diet and on top of that I always hand feed them Xtra Vital, Gerty GP and Selective science. They're like nice little healthy treats on top on their main diet. Ofcourse they get all of the not so healthy treats too! lol

I think i'm going to take your approach amie. Mine went off their P@H nuggets, to the point were they preferred eating their finacard bedding. So after trying to get them to eat the nuggets I succomed and am now feeding them xtravital. But yup, guess what they're doing now, leaving the nugget bits behind in that. So, time to take the tough approach (tough for me that is!). My only worry is that them eating the bedding fills their bellies up but obviously doesn't provide the right nutrients.

Mine eat plenty of hay and P@H nuggets now, but they still enjoy the occasional treat of finacard. Strange little critters.

I do not have access to food brands most of you are using for your degus, but since you ask, I use a combination of two degu foods both being of the Versele-Laga brand from Belgium.
The first is Versele-Laga Degu Nature.
Crude protein 14 % Crude fat 3,5 % Crude ash 6 % Crude fibre 15 % Calcium 0,80 % Phosphorus 0,55 % Lysine 0,62 % Methionine 0,23 % Vitamin A 12.000 IU/kg Vitamin D3 1.500 IU/kg Vitamin E 40 mg/kg Vitamin C 85 mg/kg Copper-cupric(II) sulfate 11 mg/kg
Composition Derivatives of vegetable origin Vegetables Vegetable protein extracts Minerals Seeds Yeast Fructo-oligosaccharides Herbs Calendula extract Calendula Algae Yucca extract Mannan-oligosaccharides Grape seed extract
The second food I use to mix with the first is Versele-Lage Pro Chinchillas et Octodons.
Crude protein 16 % Crude fat 3 % Crude ash 8 % Crude fibre 20 % Calcium 1 % Phosphorus 0,5 % Vitamin A 10.000 IU/kg Vitamin D3 2.000 IU/kg Vitamin E 30 mg/kg Copper(II)sulphate pentahydrate/copper 8 mg/kg
Composition Derivatives of vegetable origin Vegetable protein extracts Herbs Seeds Minerals Fructo-oligosaccharides Yucca extract
I use these two foods + hay as a nutritional base and use flowers, herbs, leaves, and fresh/dried vegetables to supplement the diet.
