Mine is 60cm and they really try to get out at times, no escapees from it so far.

Lol! Megan, my 60cm playpen was fine until my OH put in a box that they managed to use as a ledge for escaping from it. After that, one of my lads did a bit of training (cue Rocky montage), until they could jump out from the floor. I had to make a new one at 70cm high which they haven't even bothered trying to escape from, despite the fact they sit on my shoulder and check out the rest of the room

You could try stapling some stiff cardboard around the top for a quick fix, or glue/ screw on some more piece of MDF to extend the height. It won't matter about the join because it should be out of reach for chewing, unless they learn some sort of leap-chew manoeuvre!

They were in it for roughly 2-3 hours. No escapes but boy they did try. They seemed to enjoy all the toys and extra space.

Does anyone have any suitable pics we could use to replace the ones missing from the initial post in this thread?
I'd be very grateful if anyone could supply any playpen pics, general pics, close ups of the hinges, anything useful.
Thanks

me too, id love to make a fold away pen that I can put my degus in while I clean them out or while I watch tv with out them escaping, would some sort of netting over the top help keep them in maybe?
you can buy small animal pens with nets over the top but im not sure if they are suitable for degus?

If the sides are tall enough then you shouldn't need netting, but it's quite a good idea for extra security if you need to leave them unattended for a short while. The bought pens are all fairly short and easily climbable so you are really relying on the netting or mesh on the top. I haven't used one myself, but I tend to think they would be inviting the degus to try to escape, so they may not enjoy the time in the pen so much, they might get a bit obsessed about escaping. I also think it is a big advantage to be able to get in the pen with your degus for some bonding and playtime

what height would you suggest 60 cm or over?

It depends entirely on the degus. If you look through the thread some are still escaping from 86cm, but I would think this is unusual. Mine don't even consider attempting 60cm. Try 60cm if you don't mind if you have to extend the height with cardboard or something, go for 81cm if you want to increase your chances (81cm is mdf sheet length 2.44m divided by 3) I guess it also depends how long your legs are for getting in and out of the pen yourself.
