>INGREDIENTS<
2 handfuls natural, rolled porridge oats 2 handfuls plain wholemeal flour 1/2 handful raw peanuts, skinned and finely crushed 1 pinch sesame seeds 1 teaspoon dried parsley 2 teaspoons sunflower oil some water to bind
1. Preheat the oven to 200 ºC 2. Mix all the dry ingredients together 3. Add the oil and mix thoroughly 4. Add the water little by little until the mixture forms a stiff paste 5. Take a tiny bit of mixture between your thumb and forefinger and roll the mixture into little balls. These should be small enough for your degu to handle, about 1 cm across (note that they will not rise) 6. Place the balls on a baking tray (no need to grease) 7. Bake on the top shelf of the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown Allow to cool thoroughly, the treats will be crunchy and very tasty (try one yourself!)
*It is VERY IMPORTANT that the treats are completely cool before giving them to your degus.*
Give your degus one treat each as a special reward, but don't overfeed them. If your degu is overweight and on a weight loss diet, you should modify the recipe so that there is no oil added, and only a few peanuts. If your degu is underweight or in recovery and needs to gain weight, modify the recipe to include 3 teaspoons of oil, 1 handful peanuts and 1/2 handful crushed, shelled sunflower seeds. In special cases you can also add 2-3 teaspoons recovery diet to the mixture, which will help encourage your degu to eat and put on weight.

All recipes need a picture of the final result. ;D Just messing, looks like a useful recipe might try it sometime.

WOW!! They look great! In fact, I'm laughing at myself right now because when I first looked at your first photo I though . . . "WHAT??? She's made them some carmel covered popcorn???!!!" I went back to the recipe and there discovered (again) the instruction to roll the ingredients into small balls. THEN I saw the second picture. LOL!! Yup . . . I want to go to bed . . . NOW! Feels like today has lasted forever! So . . . did you taste one yourself?

I think I would cook them through, and then see if he will eat them that way. If not, you can always break them apart a bit, or add a tiny bit of water.

I have no idea what it is supposed to do, but I have removed it so that it can't be looked up again. . . do you mind if I take it out of your quote?

I would try them with their usual healthy food, I don't know what you feed them but perhaps a mixture of hay, chinchilla/degu pellets and fresh veg, but sprinkle some dried basil and rosemary over it. I read yesterday that they can have these dried herbs as well as fresh ones and when I tried it out they LOVED it. It might be good for yours because they seem to love the flavour of the herbs but at the same time it saves giving them an unhealthy treat. Having said that though, don't avoid treats altogether but if she/he is ill then it might be best not to overdo it.

I've made oaty balls before as a treat they love them. Left the bag next to the cage and my little blighters managed to grab a bit of the bag, pull it through the bars and demolish the lot. Thank god there wasn't many left!!! I may be about to make myself look inexperienced and a bit silly but I have an important question!! When I had a sick degu, I fed oats, ground peanuts, a bit of museli etc mixed with a little water and microwaved to make kind of sticky porridge. It was hilarious when she tried to bury it! But my question is: Why does it have to be completely cool before feeding it to the goo? Can they not eat warm food? Because when I have fed "goo porridge" to my sick goo in the past, it was slightly warm and she seemed to like it...

LOL . . . well . . . I've no idea really . . . but I would think that they may not be able to spit out the food well enough to prevent a serious burn inside?? However, I think you mean something that is more like to luke warm, not much more than room temperature? Food at that temperature shouldn't be an issue or a hazzard, but if anyone knows differently, please do tell us!!!
