Well said emz.
@ Tanya The best is not to rely souly on the label. Most pine wood today seems to be dried to a certain extent. My father and I took a 20 year old dresser (desk) apart last week. It was made of pine and you could easily smell it. As soon are you opened one of the drawers, there is a strong aromatic scent that surounds you.
Most pine woods today however carry no scent and in many cases, the knots have been cleaned and are free of resin.
As emz points out, labels can be misleading. You wouldnt expect a sheet of kiln dried pine to still have resin on it... So its always best to see yourself if the wood is safe rather than rely on labels.

My dad is a joiner too! ;D Well, sort of - he has the qualifications but doesn't do it as a profession any more he is a police officer. He is handy to have around for decorating, fixing walls, installing fixings etc. though lol.

If it's kiln-dried and untreated, it's safe...simple as that when it comes to pine. Smell the wood, you shouldn't be able to smell anything.
That said, a lot of this is degu owners being overprotective of their pets so there'll be some woods (like Willow for instance) that different sources disagree on...it's up to you to decide for yourself which side of the fence you want to be on :-)

For the outer walls it doesn't matter what wood you use as long as the shelves are something safe and the wood doesn't smell of anything. I assume the pine you guys get is fine. People sell shelves on ebay most of the time so for the shelves you could even check there.

Ok, great, thank you! (I actually was speaking about the wood for the walls of the cage.) I will check on ebay for shelves, thanks for the tip! Now, if I can just convince Violet I can be trusted...lol

What about some of those woods in BEDDING?

Woods for bedding/substrate generally are either kiln dried pine or aspen. You will occasionally see birch or spruce shavings as well. I would personally just stick with the kiln dried pine or the aspen. Less stuff to think about.

I saw Java branches in p@H today ( in the bird section but they have nuts and washers for cage attachement) would that be safe?

I'm sure blueberry bush without fruit on is perfectly safe, even good since it lower sugar levels. My girls fight for fresh branches with leaves on. I'm thinking about blueberry that grows in pine forests, not sure about american blueberry.
Edit: I didn't know blueberries are not considered as woods. Well, I did, but I didnt think about it before posted it. Oh well.

silly question, but why is Plum wood on both safe and toxic lists? I'm new to Degu's and so far have given my guys apple branches, but have the option of giving pear, plum and hazel - all untreated etc

Good question, maybe the "toxic" list hasn't been updated recently? There are a couple of other woods which can be used perfectly for degus. As for the three you mentioned (pear, hazelnut and plum) you can give them to your degus without any problem.

Oops. The link to the Degutopia toxic woods list is outdated and should be removed. Many of the woods declared toxic by Degutopia are perfectly safe for degus. This includes stone fruit trees like plum.

Is Grey Alder (Alnus incana) safe for degus? A Norwegian page on degus (a lady that had had several degus in foster care over many years) said it was fine, but I like to double-check so that I don't give them anything toxic.

The wood of alder trees (genus Alnus) is safe. You can also give them branches with leaves on, but introduce the leaves slowly, as you should to do with each new food they will be getting (sure you have seen this one before ).
