It grows here in wild, especially near human settlements. In warmer regions it is a problematic introduced plant, compete with the native flora for space and other resources. But it is also possible to buy some in do it yourself markets, garden centres and so on. It is pretty expensive even if many species are fast growing and easy in care. Some species are also suitable as pot plants.

Well I just bought mine from the local homebase (DIY store) where they also sell plants. I think I've attached a picture of what it looks like. The degus go mad for it! We've been trying to keep them away from it until we knew it was safe, but now we'll let them really go to town They're particularly fond of the little juicy shoots that are growing from higher up the stems. Davx, thanks very much for the information. Attachments:

I'm confused about this bamboo ..... I thought so called "lucky bamboo" - Dracaena sanderiana was toxic to pets and it was the so called bamboo you could find in stores. Or is it just another Albertan thing that we don't have in stores

It is in fact no true bamboo. Remember bamboo is a grass (well often quite a big grass) and Dracaena is related to the asparagus.

Ah, ok then. What's the final shout on letting the degus loose on it then? It's up on a high shelf anyway at the moment: we didn't want them to nibble at it too much in any case. Thanks again for your help and advice guys; I'm so glad I joined the forum here - there's so much experience and everybody seems very friendly to us newbies

Sorry to bring up this thread but I am a little confused. 1st post says "Safe Woods", the rest of the thread is about "unsafe" woods?
Is the info here still relevant? ie: the first post updated? My Goos need wood and I'm not sure what to give them
