Thank you for the tip on Olbas Oil I actually though of using something like it as my goo is really bad. Took him to vets today and she didn't make it sound too good. Came on in 24 hours though no other signs just came home from work last night and Knuckles was huddled in a corner wheezing through his mouth. Any advice? She mentioned it could be viral? I hadn't done anything differently. Vet has given us a stronger anti biotic than Batrill and I have to force feed him which is killing me coz he is so weak and squeaky. Thing is he still is moving around and is quite wriggley so I don't want to give up on him yet. Vet said to give 24 hours for drugs to work so I'm keeping everything crossed. I will buy some Olbas Oil tomorrow and give it a go. Would Vix work??? I have that here now. Really cut up as he is only 1 and a half years old and I only have two boys and that would leave Kagi all alone

Perhaps just the tiniest amount stirred into the hot water . . . but very very little . . . like less than a 1/4 tea s p o o n. You should maybe wait on that . . . till you get the Olbas Oil. I am not sure what the ingredients in Vix are, and fear it could be nasty for your goo. (Thinking it may contain eucalyptus, which is toxic to degus) You wouldn't happen to have whole caradamom in your spice cupboard? Try putting one or two pods in the hot water. I think that would be helpful but less . . . harsh than what I think Vix would be.

I didn't know eucalyptus was toxic to degus...because Olbas Oil actually contains eucalyptus oil.

You have have a point there. I guess if the Vicks were in small amount and not in contact with the skin, it should be fine. I tend to think of Vicks as being much stronger, since it is so much thicker, but that may be far from true. So . . . I guess can you give it a cautious try and see how it goes? Thanks for pointing that out, Michele23.

Hi I am new to this Forum. 3 years ago, I was sharing an apartment with a friend, he used to dry his laundry on the radiator beside my degus. I was renting the apartment and allowed him to rent a room, I kept the degus in the front room. We had many rows over this, and I believe he caused the death of one of my degus. I think the damp from his clothes may have caused one of them to get sick. Where I am going with this is my degu was sneezing and coughing and had a runny nose. I brought it to many vets, who did not know what to do with it. Then one "specialist" said it had a blockage in its nose. She explained the degus only breath through there nose, they cannot breath through their mouths. When they get this blockage, it is usually fatal. She suggested an operation that has a poor record in terms of results, or a dose of steriods. I choose the steriods. In hindsight I should have just put the degu to sleep, as it had a miserable end. I had to but it in a container and spray an inhaler into it. He hated it. The steriods made it look like it was a weight lifter, but it just proplged the inevitable. He lost his fur, his teeth grew long and crocked and he cried often. In the end i put it to sleep. So if it has the same condition, I feel there is little hope for it, so do not make my mistake and allow it to suffer.
