Sounds like they'd gotten comfortable enough to decide to get scrapping. It would be a good idea to start things again from the top and go very slowly. See how they do during playtime and if there are any new aggressions brewing, and be sure to give them space and time if it looks like they need it.

One thing is always certain, dominance and the two lower positions must be decided and fully accepted before peace will reign. I do think things are going well. If the boys had been committed to a true FBOD, they wouldn't have been easily separated by a piece of cardboard. So far, I'd say they are both interested and stubbornly refusing to admit it. It will take some time, upwards of months, before all is settled, but I think you're off to a rather good start.

Thanks, deguconvert We really want to start up again but sadly Pippin has been in poor health the last few days and we don’t want to put him under any further stress with introductions. Fingers crossed he pulls through and we can start with them again once he’s ready.

He’s doing a bit better, thanks, but he’s still quite weak. He dropped about 40g in the space of a week. We thought for sure that we were going to lose him. It’s taken a lot of critical care and eyes on him, but he’s crept back up to 188g and is eating on his own again.

And signs of trouble with his teeth? Wetness around the mouth or neck, or food falling out as he is eating? Picking food up but not actually eating it? 40 grams in a week is quite a loss. I'm so glad he has regained much of what he lost, and is self feeding again.

No signs from the list other than picking up his food and dropping it. That’s when we started monitoring his weight more frequently and got him on the critical care. He’s doing much better now, eating plenty and drinking on his own. We’re just keeping a close eye on everything going in to make sure he doesn’t need the crit care again. We’re also making sure it’s all coming out too to make sure his digestion is ticking over. He’s been more like his old self today, jumping about his house like a spring chicken

It's good to hear that he's getting better again! I would recommend gauging his condition very carefully before you consider more introductions, as the stress could be dangerous when his body is already under a lot of duress.

Yeah, he’s very old now. Some days he’s springing about and others he’s a bit slower and unsteady. We’re definitely holding off for now. Jasper seems upset though, he’s constantly biting at the bars as if he wants to meet Pippin again
