Half the battle is finding something gummy that they like. Honestly! She’s so picky and the complete opposite to her sister Daffodil! Here’s a picture of her eating her cc from the saucer as recommended - I made it quite thick and she prefers it i.postimg.cc/GtPc5PrG/image.jpg

Congratulations you have achieved full goo slave status now that you are baking for her Your bake does sound tasty, I'm glad she appreciated it. Does she have a heatpad and/or a well stuffed nest to keep warm, particularly overnight? I'm just thinking that keeping her warm saves her burning calories to keep warm.

She has a well stuffed nest and I got more bedding today and stuffed it even more - when I’m home in the evenings I also put in a warm water bottle in there too and she and her sister love to cuddle up on it

Does anyone know what might be wrong with daisy’s cheek? The vet said it could be because of the surgery or maybe because she’s scratching it and said to keep an eye on it as she is progressing nicely but just thought I’d ask on here postimg.cc/gallery/L86Mt6b

With it being wet, presumably from saliva caused by tooth problems, I'd say she's over grooming it. The skin doesn't look red or broken, so keep an eye on it.

Just wondering if the advice from the vet came of him seeing her in person? If he did . . . did he use an otoscope to look in her mouth and see her molars? It is probably silly to think, but I'm wondering if he missed something when he did the dental. That is a LOT of saliva.

I sent the vet a picture and he just said that it’s probably due to her scratching it which I’ve noticed too and he said that it’s normally sore post surgery and since she’s progressing to just keep an eye on it I don’t think they would’ve missed anything as they did X-rays and 3D scans of her and her teeth beforehand but I’ll keep an eye on it and get them to check in person if it persists

So the vet sent me over her notes and he said the following
CT not xray Molars og++ in mouth trim & file molar roots og esp lower rhs penetrating mand cortex mid ear disease lhs- filling of ventral bulla and thickening ca tympanum
I was wondering if the dental issues are treatable or if she will just have to be on metacam for the rest of her life? The vet did say that with the sulfatrim they will see how it goes but she may have to be on metacam permanently Does this mean that she won’t recover from her dental issues?
She means a lot to me and I would hate for her to be suffering/ need to be put down

Can you see where the wetness is coming from? Is it all saliva? Worth checking if the eye is weeping. The skin looks fine so it shouldn't be a problem beyond whatever is still causing her to dribble so much, hopefully it will resolve.
She has dental disease that won't improve but may well be managable with metacam for some time to come, it could only be months or could be years. Her immediate future depends on her continued recovery from the dental work, and how she responds to the antibiotics. Do we know exactly what the antibiotics are for?
She has had the dental work now, which was the biggest immediate risk for her, so now is the time to love and look after her, exactly as you are doing, and see how comfortable she ends up. Degus are quite good at letting you know when they have had enough, and their appetite is usually a good gauge of them wanting to carry on. If I were you I would carry on with the course of sulfatrim and the supplementary feeding and get her on a decent dose of metacam and see how she is in a week or two.
I've googled some of the terms in the vet notes. The second to last note means her tooth roots are overgrowing into the bone, especially on the right. (you may be able to feel this running your finger along her lower jaw?) On the last note the ventral bulla is the middle ear and the tympanum is the eardrum. I'm not clear if this is infection in the ear or perhaps fluid or inflammation - you could look out for her messing with the left ear or any head tilt as an indication of it causing her a problem. Another piece of info you may find useful is that degus usually breathe more rapidly when they are in strong pain, so that is something else you can look out for.
When I had poorly degus that I was worried about quality of life, I always found that seeing their contentment lying on a heatpad encouraged me to know they were OK for another day. I can recommend a snugglesafe heatpad as they stay warmer for so much longer than a hot water bottle. When they have had enough, they will spend more time sitting in unusual places away from their cagemate.

[b Her eye seems fine so it might just be from the surgery- I can see it’s getting better though- will keep you all updated on it Yeah the vet mentioned dental disease but I didn’t realise how severe it actually was She seems to be recovering well and putting on weight slowly I’m glad I got the dental surgery done for her The antibiotics I think are for her ear infection and also just to prevent any other infections as she struggled with her cheeks being infected due to her teeth Thank you for your research! I tried to research but couldn’t find anything so that’s really helpful She’s eating and drinking and playing and cuddling with daffy her sister And I’m making sure she’s loved and cuddled every day- she’s my little baby I’ve just ordered a snuggle safe so I’m excited for her reaction for it

Glad they like it!
Have you double checked she isn't have an issue with the water bottle? I can't really think of anything else other than watching close to figure out the circumstances of the saliva coming from her mouth.

Dang. That really looks weird. I'm not even sure a degu can put out that much saliva! Like Molette, I'd advise maybe checking the water bottle and otherwise watching her very carefully to see how this happens.
Do you take them out of the cage for excercise/playtime? I'm thinking that if you dried her well before that, and allowed them to have time outside the cage (but of course only if you have a safe area), you could see if this happens when they're not in the cage as well. That would at least ensure that it's actually saliva and not just her somehow getting wet from the bottle or something.

My little Daisy doo crossed the rainbow bridge today We went to the vets and she was very thin and dehydrated and she looked like she had just given up so we were prepared for it but it still hurts They were very sweet about it and we’re going to bury her later today Thank you everyone for your help

You did absolutely everything you could. I hope it made it a little less painful with her giving you a clear sign she was ready. I'm very sorry for your loss, Daisy seemed like a very special degu full of heart.

Very sorry to hear this! I agree that you did everything there was to be done. I'm sure that Daisy was grateful for all you had done as well.
