Hope he's Ok and you've caught it in time for it to be an easier fix.

Well, we just got back from seeing John - his awkward walking action and the infection have led to a disintegration of the joint! He's going to amputate the leg on Monday. My bestie is coming up to stay at my place to do the post-op care (wound cleaning and antibiotics), then my friendly goositter will take over as normal. Don't know what I would have done without Steve coming up to take over!

What a shame to have to amputate after all the effort to get it heal, at least amputation should provide a good fix. Hope all goes well.
I wonder if the infection and swelling messed up the joint?

I am so sorry, Bouncy!! Definitely not the news we all hoped you would hear. I'll admit though . . . I was really afraid it might be something even worse, and am actually relieved with the news. I hope all goes beautifully well for every part of his recovery and healing!

Not the best news, but if it improves his quality of life and prevents further problems, I think its the best option.

Thanks guys. It really is the best option! He fought a valiant battle, but he's going to be better without it.
I'm just glad Steve is able to come and stay whilst I'm away. Because I medically can't drop him off first thing on Monday morning, the guys are going down there this evening. Luckily, Spud is fine with anaesthesia.

The on-call vet and nurse this weekend say the boys have settled back in again at the hospital. I sent them down with their usual forage, as well as a bag of sunflower and pumpkin seeds, with permission for cuddles and tummy raspberries.

OH . . . is today the day of the surgery? I have my days all muddled . . . I would love to know how he is doing as well.

He's home! Had a call lunchtime to say all had gone well, they'd put him back in the hospital ward, and Sausage immediately piled onto him. He and Sausage went a bit crazy when I went to collect them, and I had to pick up a fair few woodshavings that Sausage felt obliged to eject from the carrier. He's moving around the cage without issue, has been out briefly on the kitchen floor, and is generally no different. It's his left back leg that's gone, so his tail is now to that side, and he sometimes has a slight tail end drift. The one thing he's really missing, but is still trying to do, is scratch behind his ear on that side. youtu.be/MFhEkaONML8

I love the little bum wiggle he has now. You can almost see him thinking 'why do I still have that itch behind my left ear?'
He's doing great though!

In spite of a slight alteration I'd made in the cage to help him between levels, he's getting around without any problems. He's still confused about jumping, but I bet the itch behind his ear is bugging him even more I just hope Steve is up to the challenge of catching him every day for a wound check and clean!

If he's anything like mine, treats are a always useful aid to wrangling degus.

When I took him to see John on Friday, it took three hours to catch him. The first time we went with his foot, I just grabbed him. After that, he'd scarper as soon as I opened the door. I caught him once in the transfer tube, never again. I then let him and Spud out for a short run and catch him outside the cage. Now, he just runs up and down the two levels at the back of the cage, and I swear I can hear "nernernernerner".

I just put some sunflower seeds in the catch-a-goo-tube and Sphene just strolls straight in, its when she's eaten all the seeds I have the problems.

Sausage has a distinct advantage when battling for seeds now - they were both lined up at the bars. When I got the seed tub, Sausage arranged himself on Spud's right. When the barging started, Spud kept getting pushed over because he had no leg on the opposite side to leverage against. DOH!

He looks very well! Did they remove just the foot . . . so still a portion of his leg is there?

The whole thing has gone! Not even a stump. I think he'll be okay with me being away because, when I watched him last night, he was dragging the excised area across the floor. If I'm not there, he stays on shavings, so he won't develop a sore like he did on the heel.
