My 9 year olds didn't cost anything until they were 8 years+ healthcare wise (teeth and age related issues / heart meds).
Conversely, my girls caught a cold and that cost me £47 to have all 4 seen and meds given. So it can be completely fine. Things can and do happen, but that's true of any pet. Degus are pretty hardy from my experience.

I've started a poll in the health section so you can get an idea of at what age problems tend to start. This will give you a rough idea of future issues etc. There will be a couple of anomalies, there always is, but should help with your decision.

I actually keep all sorts of rodents and I find vet trips to be very rare for the most part. Now obviously, genetics can factor into this a bit. It's always worth asking about the family history if you can. This said, my old boys came from pets at home which are supposedly in the lower end of the gene pool and lived so long with no issues!

Hazel. I’m not local (Lancashire) but after the pandemic is over please feel free to come and visit me and my girls. I can show you our set up and chat about your worries. I too looked at insurance when I got both my current girls and my previous group, and the quotes were astronomical.
I put away what I can each month like Savvy for emergencies, but I also have a 0% interest credit card that is for animal emergencies only. It’s not ideal but it gives me price of mind that if something happened, I can pay for it and deal with repayments later. The only downside is keeping on top of the 0% interest period and changing cards before interest starts being applied.

The credit card sounds like a good last resort, of course so long as the degu owner is careful to repay it in full at the end of each month.

With a 0% credit card, you sometimes get a grace period of a couple of months so you don't have to clear it all at the end of the month. They're designed to spread the cost.

Hi Hazel,
I know this thread is a little old, but I would be happy to be your sponsor, and cover any pet bills that come up in the coming few years should you take a group from the RSPCA. I'm not even close to wealthy, but I like to spend my money on good things, so if it would help a responsible owner rescue some animals, that would be great!
The only other thing you have to think about though is whether you can spend the money for their food, toys and substrate on a regular basis.
Not sure how the covering would work, but could be something to explore, so let me know if you are still looking and are interested.
Thanks!
