Niiiiiice! I had one like that, couldn't even bend my finger! After a week with no charge, I had to get antibiotics! Cue explaining degus to a doctor (again) and reassuring her that their teeth really can go to the bone on a hand lol

My doctor actually ended up just calling my vet to see what treatment should be for my swollen degu bite!

That was the shortest face to face probably in history it ended within 10 seconds, tried to do a face to face with no barrier and as soon as gizmo saw him straight into a furball, just thank god I was ready with 3 thick thermal gloves to separate them...
Edit: dont worry no one got injured either

Hmm so yesterday's meeting lasted a lot longer about 5mins, again didn't end well 2 fights broke out this time both of them started one each.... the only thing which kept them occupied and not fighting was they had a peanut each 🤣.
Though now I'm confused as hell they seem to want to be together when they are in the cage, talking etc.. gizmo even sleeps next to him in the part they are at face level but when it comes to no bars they just want to kill each other

Sorry, I don't remember, but where are you doing intros again? Is it a completely neutral area?
I actually had issues with a completely neutral bathtub when doing intros. But when I put down a towel, and let both groups get their scent on it, it actually ended up really helping. Not sure if the lack of scents triggered a 'must build my territory' drive, but the additional scent markers let them realize that they actually liked each other and wanted to hang out. Sorry if that didn't make sense!

You've had him about 5-6 weeks now? And they have been in cages side by side the whole time? What is the age of the little one?

Since the 30th October and yep, next to each other, occasionally putting them in each others cages, swapping stuff etc... and no real idea tbh the RSPCA said he was about 12 months

AH!! SO . . . not so little! In fact . . . at 12 months he is smack dab in the middle of the adolescent/young adult stage. So he will be determined to dominate Gizmo. He could be in this stage for several months yet . . . some degus are in it up to the age of 2 years, though most seem to end before or by 18 months. Soooo . . . hmmm! Things could be topsy turvy for a while. How would you feel about backing off on the intros for a month and re-evaluating then? You might even want to give it until say . . . February? And then maybe try some face to face? I would also stop swapping them between cages, and just swap substrate. In degu brains . . . if you walked on it, it belongs to you. Anyone else that walks on that space . . . an invader that must be chased off, or thoroughly dominated. Somehow, placing the smells in their cage vs them actually walking their smells through the cage, VERY DIFFERENT reactions, the latter method typically bringing on greater aggression. The biggest influence is in the mind of each degu, because it KNOWS it walked through the other cage and no one was there to tell them they couldn't own/claim it.

Oddly enough they dont really do anything in each others cages but walk around the go to the middle and talk to each other. It does stop the bar twanging though XD
As for the little one trying to be dominant yeah not going to happen, they also get fed in order of dominance and have fuss in the same order.
I know it will take time etc.. but it feels like they go one step closer to getting on with each other to wanting to kill each other it's getting annoying that they wont make up there little minds already lol

Demoralising as it may feel, try not to rush them - they have goo company at the partition, which will hopefully grow into loving friendship, but nothing bears a grudge like a goo scorned. You're doing a brilliant job, and are getting great results (even with that pesky bar twanging ), so don't lose heart!

Oh I know I just wish I could speak degu and tell them to pack it in and I'm the boss lol
But it does always seem like it's one step forward one step back all the time

Totally get it! I have a goo that has a grudge against the rest of the world! He's already lost one of his trio, and I know there's no way he's going to make friends with another. He still hates me for his brother passing, even though he came with us to the vet!
