I just had to separate the other 2 females from Maisie and the babies. They had a fight over a piece of food and Maisie had blood round her eye. Now an hour later the eye is closed and there area under the eye seems to be swollen. They have had small squabbles before but no-one has ever bitten anyone. They are all a bit agitated so i thought I would leave Maisie alone to rest. I think I have 4 babies. There are 2 with white stripes like Maisie and at least 1 dark one but maybe 2! imgur.com/IyIjyEy

WOW . . . some of them are going to have a lot of white on them! They are lovely!! How is Maisie doing? Do you have some extra foods in her area for her? Seeds, nuts, maybe some porridge oats?

Hi Maisie is doing fine except that she is being so aggressive towards both the others. Polly is so easy going she just accepts it and it calms down. But Rosie and Maisie have never settled their position. They have always squabbled a bit but Maisie has been dominant perhaps due to her huge size. Now Rosie is fighting back. As soon as we let them together Maisie attacks Rosie and we have to separate them. They have all been out to run around but not Rosie and Maisie together. I think they will have to battle it out at some time but for the moment I can't risk Maisie being injured and not being able to take care of the babies. Maisie gave birth downstairs so she is there and Rosie and Polly are up. They have a metal grid between them and Maisie is there a lot trying to get through. So far 2 of the babies have come out briefly. Still waiting to see them all.

Make sure you keep them warm enough . . . pups can't generate their own body heat for the first four weeks. I was also thinking that maybe you would be best to obscure any sight of the other two degus for several weeks. If Maisie is greatly agitated by seeing them, she could forget to care for her pups, or she could become aggressive with them. The calmer she can be, the better for both her and her babies. Just saying the above because in the photo, the ones that will be white look rather hairless? AND I'm feeling chilled and shiver just looking at them.

Use a large wooden chopping board they are quite cheap and splinter free

Use a large wooden chopping board . . .to keep the pups warm . . . or block the sight of the other degus so Maisie can't see them? I'm assuming to block the view.

Yes to obscure the view
