Came home from work and Rob has cut the hole!!! He used a fancy contraption called a hole saw. Now Boo and Toby have access to their other level again, still got some perspex to drill on to the bottom which is why there is fallout.

Aww yeah that is Toby jumping about at the top, you can see Boo on the flying saucer at the bottom and either of the girls sitting on the level above

So the cage seems to be working well so far, we have lots of ideas for extra shelving and layout which we will be putting in place in the next few weeks. Rob is going to build some sand bath boxes with perspex fronts which will attach to the cage which sound fun! They haven't touched the plastic sheets yet despite them bring exposed with digging which is good. We had a slight panic when Boo started chewing the bottom of the girls shelf... We completely forgot to think about them being able to chew up! The shelf has now been lined with metal strips on the edges to prevent this. I have noticed this though!!! Nooo!

Great work!
Today I have ordered some perspex to go around the sides of my cage (10cm high; I hope that this will be enough to solve most of the kick-out issue). I have chosen the mirrored perspex for the rear, as I thought that this would be a nice effect. I aim to simply slide the sheets (2mm thickness) into the gaps between the wood and cage (on the outside). Hoping that I don't get chew issues. We'll see!

Yep mine is all 2mm thickness too, yours sound like it will work great, please take a pic of the mirrored perspex once it is in so I can see! My perspex on the front is on the inside attached to the bars with wire, not had any chewing. Now I've got these new shelves I've put the perspex on top of the edges for extra reinforcement. My sides are completely covered in perspex which is attached to the outside frame with screws: We are going to completely cover the back like this too (hopefully tonight!) then it will be a case of drilling holes in the perspex for wheels, toys and water bottles etc.

Yes, aluminium edging is quite soft compared to degu teeth, I have a piece covering an edge near the heater that has taken a lot of stick, but they aren't anywhere near chewing right through it, and (hopefully) they aren't actually ingesting it.

We are almost there! Rob has worked so hard this weekend. Sorry for photo overload, just really wanted to share the cage so far! Only things left to do now is for us to attach the last remaining two pieces of perspex to the bottom of the cage, add the last remaining metal strip underneath the new shelf and build a second sand bath for Toby & Boo. The back is now completely covered in perspex. Holes had to be drilled for the screws for the wheels Rob made a sandbath for the girls. It is clever as the bottom has a wide gap to empty it, which we have covered with my favourite stuff (correx) to keep the sand in while in use. More ledges have been added (I keep going to straighten the slopes one!) Small shelves have been added across the back for both groups for extra seats and exploring space. The perspex and correx have been untouched so far and are doing a great job keeping the mess in! Full picture of the cage, such an improvement and not one plastic shelf to be seen! We have also covered all the wooden replacement shelves with black correx and attached with strong velcro so they won't be able to pull them out of place... We are expecting chewing on these shelves though.

Thanks! It's either passion or complete madness he has been really handy! We are moving in 5 weeks time, so now I know the cage is done it is one thing off my mind. Going to be so worried about it being transported though!!

It looks fantastic, and I just love how large each shelf is, I think they are 1.5m+ long aren't they? Are they enjoying the changes? Better get that 44tonne articulated lorry booked for the move!

Yes the shelves are 155cm long by 48cm deep. They all seem to love it! Bella and Harmione slept in the hanging basket last night so they must like the location of that.
The perspex must be providing some kind of insulation for them which is good, both for heat and noise. I just like how light and airy it is in the cage now, at the moment we relay on the big standing lights either side, but in the new house they may not be necessary to be on all day like they are now. I think I'm going to wrap this cage in bubble wrap to transport lol, I'll be worried it will get damaged.

that looks amazing!
If the do insist on chewing shelf edges, put a strip of wood there, specifically for them to chew on. When it gets too-chewed away, replace it. By offering them something to chew while at the same time blocking the edge of what you don't want them to chew, you might save important things from destruction.

Thanks Winic, came home today and can't see any destruction, although they have had a good go on the chew toys by the looks.
