Project: Home Kingdom
So I have a few things in mind for this project. They are: building new wooden shelves, combing various substrates for bedding/digging (soil, sand and hay/straw), creating wooden splashguards/pooguards, sterilising stones for use in the cage and scavenging the outdoors for various (safe) branches etc. If you have any ideas and or suggestions please let me know! New Ideas:
- Tic Tac wheel (16 inch)
- Terracotta plant pots

UPDATEI have three pieces of wood that I'll be using to create some shelving for my goos. I'm still debating if I should use wingnuts or screws

Wingnuts are easiest.
You need to buy dowels/hanger bolts and then the washers and wingnuts.

Smelling it might also help. If it's solid wood it'll have a woody smell. That's solid kiln dried pine.

This sounds fun, I think it's fun to find and use things that you find on your travels, free stuff or things you see when you aren't expecting it. It's worth asking around friends or family about safe wood trees, fruit trees are a good place to start. My girls quite like rocks for standing on for that little bit of extra height, I think I just washed the ones I found with soapy water. I think digging substrate is different from regular substrate, I actually found it difficult to find something that would hold tunnels while still being dry and not attracting mould. Have you see this thread about extending the half shelves, if that is something that interests you? deguworld.proboards.com/thread/19881/aventura-modifications-complete There are other ways of doing it. ROFL at wood smelling like wood!

There is a product caller termite sand or something like that. It is made for digging animals. It just needs to be wet when formed. When it dries up it hardens.

How do you get the bolts into the wood though for the wing nuts? Do you have to use a drill etc? I've no idea tbh ! I just used woodscrews through large washers and hand screwed em in

QUESTIONI'm trying to source wood for my goos splashguards and have stumbled across this wood from B&Q. It is pine and planed so it sems to be safe for both my goos and myself but I would like a second pair of eyes just to double check if it is completely suitable.

You need to be careful with some redwoods. Two ticks.....

UPDATE
I've got permission from my parents for switching back to bedding from fleece (I regret even wanting to use it ). I think I'll be using this wood for the splash guards and any other ideas that I may have for my goos. I'm thinking about making my half levels into full levels but I'm not sure since I'm already planning to make shelves from re-purposed wood (corner shelves etc). I have also found these terracotta pots from Wilko. Would they be okay for my goos?

Anything pure terracotta is fine jack and the herb/strawberry planters are especially cool (I picked one up from B&Q for about £8?) they have all different entry holes! You'll want to use shorter lengths than 3.6 metres, especially when you go and inspect them in person. They're usually really warped (they store them outdoors) and so no good for anything. Shorter lengths are less likely to warp. We were going to use this wood in our accessory making adventure, but it's so terribly warped it's not usable for anything. We get our wood from a timber merchants instead. Making the half levels into full levels would be much more beneficial to the degus than levels and shelves. They are ground squirrels so wide long spaces for running is greatly more important than ledges and shelves!

I've found a *very* local merchant next to me. I'm emailing them to see if they can help out.

QUESTION
What wood would be best for the base of the half length level extensions? I have spare chipboard sheets available and would make it so it isn't easily accessible or chewable. Would that be okay?
Hopefully my grandad will be able to help out since he's rather good at DIY and wood working.

Will there be another covering over top of the chipboard? Chipboard will absorb any urine or water, will swell, and will STINK!! BAD!!! I would avoid it if it is going to potentially be exposed to moisture of any kind.
