I've tried things like this before using egg boxes. Spidey just dragged the whole thing into the cage!

I've done the egg box thing too, mine left it for two weeks then I came home one day and not a thing even remotely resembling an egg box was left 😂

I do that all the time a small pinch of food/treat - wrapped in tons of toilet paper or paper or paper towel. Egg cartons I was doing but there became insane fights that led to blood so I have to ensure everyone has something. My current favourite one for them is to take the box you get from oranges (that have the slits in them already but tend to be very sturdy cardboard), sprinkle seeds on bottom and stuff full of hay. Then they have to 1) chew a large enough opening 2) eat or pull out the hay 3) finally get at the seeds. muahahahaha I'm so mean lol This is how I feel comfortable leaving them for 2-3 days - I fill a box fill of food for the next few days and I know it will take some effort to get at so they cant gorge on all the treat pieces (peas, carrot and such in degu nature) on the first day. OMG I just had a brilliant idea!! (please forgive me, I am on some strong pain killers and extra cannabis right now for a migraine and quite spacey) .... if we used a lot of paper towel or some stronger paper and hung it from the top of the cage it would be a true piñata for the degus!!! totally going to do that!

Enjoyed the video! Especially loved how they all triple check your hand in case you have got something better than some paper that smells very faintly of nut! If I sticky this will you all add things to the thread and keep it going? Do you want me to merge this with the hanging nuts thread?

Not seen anything of the nuts today so I think they are either demolished or buried! Mole - I can go through if you want and pull together all the different things we have all done (hanging nuts, digging boxes etc.)

another treat container I recently found - the spools that ribbon comes on .... they have small holes on both ends that you can load with seeds and the degu can either flip it over to have the seeds fall out (like a treat ball for dogs) or you could stuff hay in it so they have to chew through the cardboard and hay to find the seeds inside - depending on how quickly the degus learn. Einstein is especially good at all of these now from me using them so I am constantly on the look out for thicker cardboard and puzzle games.
Living world had wooden puzzle feeders for rabbits a while ago that they had to flip a level or pull a top out and you would fill them with treats. Took them a little while and definitely a supervised play toy (Einstein had some trouble with the sliding one and would have just gnawed off the flap if I let him lol. I bring that out sometimes too.
basically I look at anything that is edible and has a hole or you could make one can be food enrichment.

Any paper or card wrapping in my kitchen gets chucked on the floor. The thing that's really got my lot going (it took three of them, mostly Spud, an hour to get it up the tube into their cage) is an empty flour bag scrunched up into a ball!

Loving this thread atm. Buddy has started to barber his front feet so looking for ways to keep him amused. Tried the mummified nut, alas, he took the toilet roll off and added it to his nest then left the nut, lol.

I've been trying to do more enrichment activities with my girls to challenge them rather than just getting their food easily. Today I have mummified some nuts so they have to unwrap them. They have all scurried off with their prizes but I keep seeing them running around the cage with their half wrapped goodies 😂 youtu.be/5K1NF_dvDzcI didn't know if we should have a thread where we keep a record of the enrichment we all do - might give each other ideas! I did this yesterday for my degus and they loved them they took them to their nest box (which they use as a store room) then at bedtime they both took them to bed (a grass ball that they have destroyed and totally personalised to their like it's cool) and I could hear them chatting away and opening their surprise. They loved them thanks for such a brilliant idea. Xx

Something to consider......... Was driving past the shop I got my carpets from, and my brain was actually working at the same time! 4x4m tubes and a hacksaw later........ He struggles to get rid of tubes, and said he'd see me again next week! Going to get my mitre out and make a maze to go on the kitchen floor, which will hopefully also reduce the amount of poo that sticks to the soles of my feet!

I'm just looking at what to sticky and how to fit it in with what we already have. We had a sort out not too long ago to try to reduce the number of sticky threads, so now there are lots of threads collated into just a few stickied link pages. The main relevant one is the 'accessories to make and buy' sticky: deguworld.proboards.com/thread/18716/accessories-make-buy and within that we have 'interesting toy and accessories' which gives links to various threads. I could add in your suggested threads to the 'interesting toy & accessories' thread and add enrichment to the title. I think we could either pick out the 'enrichment & interesting toy and accessories' part of 'accessories to make and buy' and either put it into a 3rd separate post in the 'accessories to make and buy' thread, or possibly make a separate sticky thread. So it's a case or adding enrichment to the interesting to & accessories section and then either making it more obvious within the 'accessories to make and buy' section or giving it its own sticky thread. Hope that makes sense. Let me know what you think.
